2000-2003 Automobile Industry

A plethora of new products and a series of price cuts have put the two-wheeler industry in top gear.

The segment has several factors going in its favour, including a strong demand for new vehicles and a growth in margins. A large number of players have entered the industry.

There is a tendency for the larger players, to develop products on their own, having already absorbed technology from their collaborators. All leading players in the motorcycle industry have joint ventures with world leaders — Bajaj-Kawasaki, Hero-Honda, TVS-Suzuki, LML-Daelim and Kinetic-Hyosung.

The future is likely to see fragmentation of market share and higher segmentation. There are actually opposing effects now in the market. Rural demand has been affected by drought in the north and eastern part of the country.

But on the other hand with increasing urbanisation, low market penetration and improving ease of ownership are the positives for growth.

Bajaj Auto is offering a 0% finance scheme under which a sum of Rs 20,000 for eight months will not attract any interest.

Some of its dealers are organising lucky draws in select towns that will earn the customer a free Bajaj vehicle. TVS is offering Rs 2,000-discount on Victor.

Hero Honda is giving accessories worth Rs 700 free. Yamaha is allowing a down payment of Rs 9,999 for Enticer and Rs 6,999 for Libero
