Cascading Effect of CAS - June 17th, 2008

The CAScading Effect Of The CAS

A few happenings as regards the television industry are signaling a major wave of change that shall set pathways for new modus operandi of functioning and shall have mounting implications on the consumers, broadcasters and the cable operators. The CAS or conditional access system to be in effect from July 14 is a precursor of sorts.

The Conditional Access System shall usher in more empowerment for the consumers (supposedly) as far as choice of viewing channels is concerned. However the way the cost structure under this new system has been unveiled, the conditional access seems to befit the title of “Consumer Axing System”, which shall erode the consumer’s pockets by way of heavy charges for the set top boxes and exorbitant charges by channels while setting prices for their bouquet offers.

The cable operators are feeling the burn too as now their strategy of under quoting subscribers and thereby siphoning away large chunk of money shall be kept in check. The broadcasters are smiling all the way as this means a transparency in the system and the loss of subscription amount shall now be a matter of history.

A few channels are at cross roads, wondering whether to go free to air in the pursuit of higher viewership or opt to be a pay channel and command a premium price.

The rigmarole has also taken the media planners and media buyers gasping who are not making any arrangements and commitments for post CAS period unless the channels reveal whether they shall remain free to air or shall opt for being a pay channel.

In the meanwhile, organizations like CGSI (Consumer Guidance Society Of India) are making its attempts to protest against this unfair reform which shall spell chaos for the consumers and take a toll on their pockets.

Some smart manufacturers are eyeing a great opportunity as regards the manufacturing of the huge number of set top boxes that shall be required in the next few months.

The newspaper is rife with stories about channels blacking out several cable operators on account of their non payment of dues. The cable operators in their argument contend that the channels demand a raise in the subscription amount, which shall mean problems for the consumers.
