Post 'Un'fair ranking of B-school - December 14th, 2006

With noticeable difference in the rankings, the credibility of B-school grading by various news magazines and agencies has been the bone of contention for quite some time now.

How come a particular B-school is ranked differently by different sources? What are the parameters and issues taken into account? What about the validation of the data collected and methodology adopted? Is there any transparency in the process?

And last but not the least, does ranking help students make an informed choice while taking admissions?

The conference on 'B-school ranking - impacts and issues', held in Bangalore recently, deliberated upon the dilemma as to why the parameters of the surveys differ from each other and the reasons for the lack of uniformity in the results.

According to R A Yadav, vice-chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), "Surveys conducted by various research agencies and magazines have disrupted the status of B-schools. There have been cases of directors being given marching orders when a B-school does not feature on a rank list."

Experts felt that superficiality of the methodologies makes these rankings imperfect. Yadav questioned that if 70% of the population lives in rural India, then why are the institutes in rural areas not taken into account during the surveys?
