Three year suspended sentence for Sidhu

BJP leader and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was on Wednesday sentenced to three years in prison for a 1988 murder case.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court, which found the ex-cricketer guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder on December 2, has also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh.

However, Sidhu - a former BJP MP from Amritsar - will not be arrested immediately as his sentence has been suspended till January 31.

He can now appeal in a higher court and also contest elections.

Announcing the quantum of punishment, Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Justice Baldev Singh suspended the sentence to enable Sidhu file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court.

Extending similar relief, the court also sentenced the other convict in the case Rupinder Singh Sandhu to three years' rigorous imprisonment.

Both of them have been directed to furnish a bail bond on or before December 8.

Sidhu and Sandhu allegedly beat up one Gurnam Singh in Patiala on December 27, 1988. Gurnam later died.

Sandhu has said that the duo will approach the Supreme Court in case of an adverse verdict.

“Even we feel sorry for the family of victim. The matter is now sub judice. After the sentence is declared, we'll approach the SC,” he said.

The High Court had on December 2 overturned a lower court’s 1999 order acquitting Sidhu in the death.

Sidhu resigned from Parliament after the verdict, but has hinted that he would remain in politics and campaign during the Punjab Assembly elections in February.

The ex-cricketer received a candlelight welcome on Tuesday evening when he arrived in Chandigarh for hearing the quantum of sentence.

Accompanied by BJP leader and former law minister Arun Jaitley, Sidhu arrived in the city from New Delhi by the Shatabdi Express.

Over 500 youth and BJP activists, carrying candles, welcomed him as he alighted from the train.

Sidhu briefly addressed them before being driven away. He also thanked the BJP top brass for supporting him.

“I thank the senior leaders like Prakash Singh Badal and Jaitley. Their blessings will help me. I am thankful to them,” he said.

What makes Sidhu a popular brand?

He is probably one of cricket's funniest man. And long after his cricket scores have been forgotten, he remained a celebrity because of his witty Sidhuisms and funny antics.

His fans are like the waves of the mighty Arabian Sea, way too many and very similar.

And Navjot Singh Sidhu has become a virtual cult figure thanks to his witty one-liners. Flamboyant and vivacious, Navjot Singh Sidhu perhaps achieved greater stardom after retiring from cricket.

Wielding the mic, he has won himself more accolades and fans than swinging the bat ever did. And his Sidhuisms became an instant hit with the common man.

"If there is one thing in life that you can get without trying, it's dandruff," any Sidhu fan will belt out this Sidhuism at the slightest of provocation.

After a brief stint as a cricket commentator, which was cut short when he used four-letter words on air, Sidhu switched to endorsing high-profile brands like Visa.

He reportedly made Rs 3-4 lakh per episode for anchoring The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on StarOne. Sidhuisms were all over the air waves and his fans are still asking for more.

"Guru ho ja shuru. Siddhu, carry on!" goes another Sidhu fan.

Such was Sidhu's effect that it inspired MTV to do a spoof on him with VJ Cyrus Sahukar playing 'Piddhu'.

"Navjot Singh Sidhu is truely one of the most lovable icons in the country. He has got his own brand of strange humour with Sidhuism and his lines. While it sounds weird and funny at the same time, it also has a dash of philosophy that makes it that much more relatable," Cyrus Sahukar, MTV VJ, testifies.

Sidhu's sentence might not just endanger Piddhu's future. While the former cricketer cools his heels, his one-liners will be sorely missed
