Reliance Infra identifies 3 sites for steel plants

NEW DELHI: Billionaire Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Infrastructure has identified three potential sites in Jharkhand for setting up the Rs 40,000-crore greenfield steel project, government sources said.
In its proposal submitted to the Jharkhand government last month, the company has shortlisted Govindpur, Hazaribag and Bokaro as suitable locations for its proposed 12 million tonne integrated steel plant.
The state's Industries Department after examining the company's proposal is understood to have forwarded it to the empowered committee headed by chief secretary A K Basu.
"We are looking into the proposal and have sought opinion of government departments," Basu said.
The proposal being of mega investment, would also be sent to the Cabinet for consideration, he said.
According to an official source, the Jharkhand government has also sent Reliance Infrastructure's project proposal for vetting by PSU consultant Mecon.
Other than Reliance, leading steel producers like ArcelorMittal, Tata, JSW Steel, JSPL, Essar and Ispat have lined up greenfield steel and power projects in Jharkhand.
What, however, is lingering most of the projects face raw material insecurity, inordinate delay in land acquisition and local protests.
For its proposed project, Reliance Infrastructure would need about 10,000 acres of land and 600 million tons of iron ore in a span of 30 years.
Even as Jharkhand has come out with its rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) policy, many of the companies continue facing stiff local resistance.
