Hi,
I want to know different between supply chain and logistics. I have to do a project and I´ve found articles about it. There are these two words, but I think, they are not use correct. What´s your opinion? Do you have any definition from books?
Thanks for answer Peter

Hi,

Supply Chain is the super set. What I mean to say by that is The Supply Chain contains the logistics as well. The difference is logistics is mainly to represent the movement of goods or services from one place to other. On the other hand Supply Chain describes the processes from the Supplier to the end user. Say for instance we can consider the leather bag industry. The Supply Chain of the bag industry is vast from the leather supplier to the end user. The Logistics comes into picture when we need to ship the bags from a factory to a Warehouse or to a retail shop.

Thanks,
Sreeju

Yes, Sreeju is bang on target.. to add to what he says.

Logistics includes physical distribution, warehousing, freight transportation (inbound and outbound from manufacturing plants and in some industries customer service (sales order processing, inventory planning and production planning.

Supply chain (for a manufacturer)includes the logistics business functions above, and also includes purchasing, sourcing, procurement, buying, manufacturing operations, production scheduling and inventory control and materials management, facilities location planning, the information technology to coordinate between suppliers, the company, and customers (wholesalers and retailers and end users.

In a retail and wholesale company, the manufacturing company would be the suppliers or sometimes the wholesalers for a retail company.

In simple words, Supply chain includes the inward as well as the outward logistics .

Hi,

Let me know in which topic you want to learn more. Whether it is Logistics or Supply Chain. The terms, processes and functions are vast and varying. So it will be good if you are specific to a topic.

Thanks,
Sreeju
