View Full Version : Given a choice between HR and Marketing, which one would you choose?

Two of the most prefered specializations that students choose in their MBA are HR and Marketing, other than Finance. Many students are skeptical about taking up Marketing as specialization as one does not become the VP of Marketing immediately after the course. There is a common perception that a student with Marketing specialization may even be placed as a sales representative in a firm, which is absolutely ridiculous considering the effort the student has to give to complete a MBA course. However, HR does not have any such options and the salaries for HR people are pretty good too. However, a science background is mandatory for HR. Which one do you prefer? Is one better than the other or are both of them equally lucrative?
How would you rate the following specializations on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best?
Finance
HR
Marketing
Information Systems Management
Lets talk about it guys!

I would give preference on the basis of role at organization and type of organization.
Here comes, if it is more customer service and employee development then would prefer HR and, if it is more profit oriented and high sales promotional then definately needs Marketing as preference.
As per my preference none is my choice as i would prefer Finance to handle cost management.

Hi all,
I am leaning towards HR. I currently started working for a company where I am doing HR transactions which is data entry for HR; it’s a start in the right direction for me as I want to be an HR Rep and then one day the VP of HR. However I was unaware that one needed a science background to go into HR. How much science does one need and does anyone know why?

Hi frens as far as my opnion is concernd abt this topic is that...Every Spec has its own pros as well as cons too...one must do self SWOT(Strength,Weakness,Opportunities n Threats) by taking certain measures to evalute n thn choose which one best suits to him/her. I cant b able to scale these all progs..if maketing bring revenue , than on other side HR motivates n organise teams to earn those revenues...without employees contribution former aspect is seem impossible...whereas MIS give them a cutting edge to earn those revenues in a Systematic n quicker way...See all these are interdepent, interrelated n integrated fields...Try ur exp. n analysis it in more effective manner...Thnx

vaishali456
January 27th, 2009, 06:17 PM
I would rather like to rate them rather than making a comparison as each are equally vital. In the organization's point of view: HR - 6; marketing - 8. (as they basically concentrate on the revenue dept)
Based on jobs: HR - 8; marketing - 7 (as HR provides a good pay package and comfortable work environment)
To sum it up, as chirag mentioned it is completely dependent on the individual's perception and interests.

well guys frankly sayin , i am a student of Icfai business school & have completed my mba in both these fields..
we usualy say we want to go for marketing of HR, but both these field are huge, marketing has different subjects like retail, brand, service, sales & distribution & even HR on the other hand has subjects like T&D, Global HRM, Leadership, etc...
so its you who has to decide which is your strong point & accordingly you could select your electives, now colleges are also helping you to specialize in both the fields...
thanks & Regards

Any career choice, be it marketing or HR should be dependent on your overall persoanlity facors. If you are good IPR, empathy, conflict resolution ability, understanding human behaviour, you should choose HR as you will make successful HR professional.

hi friends, i feel it all depends on the personal look out for a particular. both fields are challenging enough.... a person who is more outgoing and loves exploring places and people opts for marketing cz its more dynamic... a person who is more people oriented and likes staying at one place is someone who'll get into HR... there is not much difference in the traits required for the two areas

I totally agree with the dilemma between HR and Marketing
It seems some time that in an organisation most important resource is human resource, however the most demanding function is Marketing because u hear a lot about HR outsourcing, but seldom about marketing outsourcing
thats my view, If u can accept challenges go for marketing, if u can live comparitively static go for HR
Its very difficult to set benchmarks for others!

Choosing a field depend upon your interet. Those who have more of interpersonal relationship, who can handle people can go for HR.and those who think they can cope up with the pressure of targets, are good in barganing and convincing can go dor marketing.Baically you should have a good insight of what you are and what you want.

Hii friends;
I have a very different point to this aspect whether HR OR MKT. First of all many of the guys opting for an MBA specialisation often have an imagination that Finance & Marketing are the best option thats availale to a majority. But the Problem is that 90% of the population Opting For SO CALLED MARKETING SPECIALISATION END UP DOING " SALES".
Let me frankly put across a view is Sales a part of Marketing OR Marketing is a part of SALES. If a student can frankly and confidently distinguish between these two major jargons of management that guy should opt for marketing.
Now as far as HR is concerened many students have an embibed perception that HR has no or minimal role to be played in the business. But Frankly if any student can understand the difference between people and productivity and can diffreniate the role of each then NO ONE CAN STOP THAT PERSON.
SUCESS OF AN ORGANISATION IS NOT ONLY ITS GROWTH; BUT WHEN ITS PEOPLE GROW ALONG WITH IT THATS THE ACTUAL GROWTH OR SUCESS OF AN ORGANISATION. And for this HR plays a great role.
So when it comes to Choosing between them of course individuals intrest does matter but one should not be in misconception that alone intrest matters.

All the specialisations i.e Marketing, HR, Finance, Communications etc are all very important aspects of any business organisations. You cant think of a business which doesnt requires any kind of people in it, so HR is involved. Finance is an important panorama of the whole business picture, you cant think of a business organization which doesnt involve money in it. And to grow your organisation, Marketing becomes an unseparated tool b'coz creating, communication and delivering values to satisfy customers is Marketing.
And it all depends about the liking and attachment towards a subject. My calling comes from Marketing, and i would go with it...

I think both are almost the same, as both has to sell. As an HR manager u r selling the product (employment) to client (prospects) who are willing to join generally which gives him/her the edge over his client whereas a sales manager has to sell it to client who has a lot of options (threat) which gives the edge to client instead of sales manager. I think that it makes thing quite obvious as to wat should be our preference if the choice is ours...

well I dont agree that Marketing is a revenue function.Marketing is a cost function as its needs finance to design and launch new products which in turn being sold by Sales people brings revenue.
Anyways, I would prefer going for HR, there are several functions in HR which keeps you updated both with the outer market trends and also about the organisational trends where you are employed.

Dear
i agree with u that marketing is cost function but can u study sales in HR for that also u need marketing background, marketing is a broad function it has to envisage cost as well as revenue. No hard feelings for HR since it is about the most important resource for an organisation.but it is nt indispensable in comparison to mktg. because small companies which dont have an HR function do earn huge benefits.

HI, MY PREFERENCE WOULD BE H.R. HAVING COMPLETED MY B.M.S DEGREE I HAD GOOD EXPOSURE OF BOTH THE SUBJECTS H.R AND MARKETING. CONSIDERING THE CORPORATE PERSPECTIVE MY PREFERENCE WOULD BE H.R.THOUGH MARKETING REQUIRES CREATIVITY, H.R IS EQUALLY CHALLENGING B'COS IT DEALS WID HUMAN RESOURCES IS THE MOST TACTFUL JOB.AGAIN IT IS MY PERSONAL VIEW.

dear all,
I am working in a big corporate house. My specialisation was Marketing and HR dual.
In my view it all depend on your interest+Job market.
Rest is all theory.

Choice is individual's own - depending upon the capabilities, interests and very often, past work experience, both of the Marketing and HR could be chosen - have seen chaps from both the streams rising to the top - in short, it is not the field you study, but the mettle within which will take you to the top.

Marketing would be my choice as it forms the backbone of any business...HR is a support function for an organisation....Without marketing, there is no customers or revenue...

:SugarwareZ-043: STILL TEHERE IS LOTS OF IMPORTANCE TO EACH & EVERY FIELD AS PER THEIR AVAILABLE IMPORTANCE....
IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT FROM WHICH BACKGROUND U ARE????

Marketing - if you have the zeal to sell, outgoing personality, good communication skills etc.,
HR - if you are people oriented, an eye to spot talent, like people manamgement, have patience.

The choice is entirely a matter of aptitude.
If you have exactly equal aptitude for both, Marketing is the choice. But one may be offered a sales job at times. It's your choice then.
