I think we can link the PAN number as SSN number.Today most of the Govt transactions ask for PAN number. So we are almost got the SSN in India.

I strongly feel India must regulate the SSN in India, This will also register the personal/Taxation and assets information about the person. Since every SSN will be cross checked by GOVT database so it will help RAW and Govt agencies fighting against Terrorists who got failed to identify them via fake Voter Cards/Driving Licences Developed by them to enter India

Don’t you guys think that SSN can be a big trap…like US citizens are already got into?
It is like numbers allotted to the person thinking they are like robot and at the end govt. can control your all assets - what r u doing?–how much money do u have?….n’ all stuff!!
You’ll not have privacy at all from any of govt. agency…!!
So, I think we should not have SSN…rather the PAN number or something like that is OK…..which is just a identification number instead of any personal account/fund information leakage!!!
BTW, anybody can have a PAN number ….. it is just a identification!!
So, I think we shouls stop copying other country's idea and build up on your own....suitable to truely democratic country....without violating the definition!!

Only a number like SSN won't be of much use - it'd be, as many said above, just copying the US concept, whereas we may already use any of the available identification-numbers ( like PAN, Voter-ID etc) - proving the SS, the social-security should, I think, be the real goal.

not a bad idea. As long as it can replace all other forms of identifications such voter id card, ration card, pan card etc...

We should have a national identity (call it SSN or something else) but something should be in place.
