I was just seeing a news report . The report went on and on about how a billion ppl in this country and so few medals. It went ahead and tore apart the current athletes of the olympic contingent for their 'irresponsible' show at the games till now .. it said how these sportsperson had led the country down..

But why complain ? We as a society don't give importance to any sport except cricket .. ask a layman to name a sportsperson outside cricket and all you'll probably come up with is sania mirza/ leander peas/ baichung bhutia .. how many of us can even name the current lot of ppl at the games.

When we have ignored them for years, why care about how they perform now ? Why just rue the dismal state of sports in the country once every 4 years for a week.

I feel little disheartened but untill India does not think about sports beyond cricket we cannot go very far......

I accept the fact that we don't give the proper infrastructure/funding to train athletes to the international level.Olympics is a game where only the best of the best wins. But I'm a little surprised when ppl coming from Africa are winning in the running/marathon races. Are countries like Kenya or Uganda spending in Billions for training their sportsman? How are they winning the events? They are constantly bagging either a Gold or Silver in Olympics. We can't outrightly deny the critics citing the infra/financial bootlenecks.Even in Tennis,in recent times Serbains(Ivanovic,Djokovic) are trying to occupy the topspot.

So it has something to do with ppl or with training?I'm still thinking about this.

In simple terms, Olympics is not hyped in India, no1 really cares, you feel good once in a while if your country wins, but its not like cricket.

Its all about the media hype, in marketing terms branding. Olympics isnt a brand in India. Football will overtake cricket soon though :tea:

Is that wishful thinking :) ... bec the way things are going including 20-20, i have a hard time believing that anything is going to overtake cricket for the next couple of decades.

All we need is an Indian Pelé and Tendulkar to retire and the ball will roll ;)

Again bringing marketing into it.

Football like F1 races, is aspirational while cricket is something everyone follows. Just like cricket was aspirational and hockey was what everyone knew way back in the 80's.

The transition is always from normal to aspirational until the aspirational becomes normal :SugarwareZ-091:

What say :juggle:

India is more concerned about cricket than to think about olympics. ipl 20-20 is a recent example of that...

With the success in Olympics.. India can surely start looking at other Sports.
With the tremendous success of IPL - the corporatization of Sports is the next big thing. But the need of the hour is to propagate other Sports- Formula One, Hockey, Archery etc. India has the potential- with focus and direction and a whole lot of appropriate marketing- any Sport can be turned into a phenomenon that Cricket is today.

Hello All,

Before putting my comment , i would like to say that the comments which I am going to put are entirely personal view and I pay my apologies to the people who would not like the mentioned comments.

You are right in saying that we have the billion people and still the medal tally list make us stand nowhere in the world ranking .

It is very easy to say some critics as it is not required to be an expert to be a critic teller. But do we just stop and listen to the needs that we have , and for God's sake do not blame the process , system etc. for the failure , as it will just pass the monkey to some other person shoulder but it should remain there.

So , what we have to do this is the question now start coming into your mind , please take a simple step that next time , your near and dear wanna to play then please encourage them to play , not to win. We as indians are sometimes very bad dreamers , once our kid wants a bat from us , we start thinking of next Little Master in our house, but that is ridiculous as it provide so much burden on that kid , that after some he is afraid of even touching the bat due to over-expectations .....

If we really want our people to win the medals , then we have start training them young and without expectations , as the kids are more smart , they would soon getting into the competition once they start developing the game spirit. All we have to do is to encourage our people to play , if we start playing, then rest of the things start line up in the desired way.

So i have bruit the points in front of all of you , so that you could carry on with this discussion.

its very unfortunate that we have the billion people and still the medal tally list is blank......

as there r not proper funds available nor they have good training facilities. So our other games r way behind 2day as compared to cricket.........

As bcci is currently richest cricket board in world of cricket, i think bcci shud help other games n players by giving some funds .. they should start some training academy for boxing, archery, hockey, football, tennis, long jump, weightlifting, etc..... as it will generate our overall development in all sports.......

but its good to hear news yesterday that after 56 years, india have won 3 medals............. CONGRATULATIONS !!!

congo to abhinav bindra, sushil kumar and vijendra......... :SugarwareZ-297:

PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN !!!

Very right. We as a society neglect sport. Besides Cricketers I dont think other sports person even hav a Job in MNC's where they even dont need to show up.

Parents, Teachers, Family push for grades. Even if one has talent he has to face all these negatives and make his own fortune. Besides no infrastructures or clubs to encourage.

Only the media fools like Rajat Sharma, yesterday he was showing how Akhil won , showing two guys boxing fights and not the Original fight. Dont knw why it is requird. Actually Indiatv is worst News Channel and from a person who was higly revered Rajat Sharma. All his efforts go into Cloning any event n showing on News.

Again, he also showed Breaking News "Khabardar aapke Soft Drink me bomb hai" slangThough we read in newspaper abt SIMI planning Liquid Bombs n all these sort of headlines put things in a drastic frame. When Aarushi Cse happen again this slang showed how, recreating all the scenes. Not all in this nation understand whts shown, he corrupts the innocent lot.

We feel pride in saying that we belong to a nation that has one of the highest number of youth in this world. However, when it comes to perform in Olympics, this particular pride takes a back seat. We being second largest populated country in the world struggle to get a single medal in olympics and ofcourse a Gold medal is like a bonus for us.
The need of the hour is not to celebrate the occasion for getting one Gold and one Bronze in this ongoing olympic. Rather it is a time to sit and analyse the root cause of our repeated failure in all other events.
We surely dont lack talent. Something is wrong somewhere at a very basic level.
My heartly greeting to our hard working sportspersons who are there fighting their best for the country.

The important thing is that the olympics forces the youth to look beyond cricket. Its a one-stop event for all sports which have been obscured by the phenomenon called cricket in India...
