In my opinion, smoking in public places should be prohibited. There are many reasons that support this point of view, but today I want to concentrate on three reasons.
One reason is that is harmful for non-smokers, another reason is that smoking is a cause of pollution, and a reason is that smokers have other ways to receive nicotine.
Firstly, smoking is harmful for non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to smoke, but it's not reasonable if that right is harmful to others. Obviously, if people smoke in public places, non-smokers have no choice but to become secondhand smokers. Don't non-smokers have the right to choose not to be secondhand smokers?
Secondly, smoking is a cause of pollution. There is a lot of research that shows that many kinds of gases that are released by smoking and are harmful for the environment, such as tar and carbon dioxide. Everyone knows that now the environment is getting worse and worse. Do you want smoking to be another source of the problem? :SugarwareZ-035:
Lastly, smokers have other ways to receive nicotine. Nowadays, we have many ways to receive nicotine, such as nicotine gum and nicotine patches. Smokers can use these products instead of smoking. Do you really want people to smoke in public places instead of using these new products?
In conclusion, I want to say that there are no reasons left to permit smoking in public places, and I also think that maybe this is the time for people to quit smoking. Banning smoking is not just for us, but for this world and for everyone who has to live in this world after us.:nonono:

There is little doubt that smoking tobacco is extremely harmful to the smoker's health. In the US, for example, research by the American Cancer Society suggests that tobacco causes up to 400,000 deaths each year - more than AIDS, alcohol, drug abuse, car crashes, murders, suicides, and fires combined. World-wide some 3 million people die from smoking each year - one every ten seconds - which estimates suggest will rise to 10 million by 2020. Smokers are up to 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers, and smoking can lead to a host of other health problems, including emphysema and heart disease. One of the main responsibilities of any government is to ensure the safety of its population; that is why taking hard drugs and breaking the speed limit are also illegal. It would therefore be reasonable to ban smoking - an activity which kills millions of people each year.

Smokers, beware! Puffing causes hundreds of thousands more deaths than previously thought, a new study has revealed.
An international team, led by researchers at Glasgow University, has found that smoking increases chances of dying from cancers of the colon, rectum and prostate as well as from lymphatic leukaemia.
As per World Health Organisation statistics, these illnesses are responsible for 930,000 deaths worldwide every year, in addition to more than five million smoking-related deaths caused by diseases such as lung cancer. The new study is based on data from 17,363 male civil servants based in London, the 'Scotsman' reported.
It found a 43 per cent increase in the chances of dying from cancer of the colon, a 40 per cent higher risk of dying from rectal cancer; a 23 per cent increase in chances of losing one's life to prostate cancer; and a 53 per cent rise in mortality from lymphatic leukaemia among smokers. "Cigarette smoking appears to be a risk factor for several malignancies of previously unclear association with tobacco use," the researchers were quoted by the leading Scottish newspaper as saying.
Added Dr David Batty of Glasgow University: "What this study shows is that smoking is linked to more kinds of cancer than previously thought. "It's important to remember that cancer is not a single disease and that the various kinds of cancers are different illnesses so you couldn't necessarily assume that smoking was linked to them in the same way. What's unclear is how exactly smoking causes these cancers."

it is banned in public places but just look at the implementation..its so beautiful...if any one goes to a constable,he sends him to inspector, inspector tells him that the area does not belong to him so u have to register a complaint in a different police station..when one goes to that police station inspector asks them to fill a form which is not available with them and they have to go a registrar for the form..this circle goes round and round and round without any result...i m a smoker but still i have a decency that i shouldn't smoke in a public place...So guys please stop smoking in a public place..

Smoking is bad in all aspects mentioned by u guys agreed.
But if the govt wants to ban smoking in public places then there must be smoking zones created otherwise in a city like mumbai every other place(which is not public) is crowded with people so the basic idea of banning smoking in public place would go waste.

hen your parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke pretty much anywhere — even in hospitals! Ads for cigarettes were all over the place. Today we're more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines.
Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten your life by 10 years or more; and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So how come people are still lighting up? The answer, in a word, is addiction.
Once You Start, It's Hard to Stop
Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.
People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friends smoke. Statistics show that about 9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. That's why people say it's just so much easier to not start smoking at all.

Effects of Tobacco Smoke
• Smoking KILLS
• Every year hundreds of thousands of people around the world die from diseases caused by smoking.
• One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age.
• Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of cancers.
• The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels.
• This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs
amputated.
• Tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney and causes cancer. A 20-a-day smoker breathes in up to a full cup (210 g) of tar in a year.
• Changing to low-tar cigarettes does not help because smokers usually take deeper puffs and hold the smoke in for longer, dragging the tar deeper into their lungs.
• Carbon monoxide robs your muscles, brain and body tissue of oxygen, making your whole body and especially your heart work harder. Over time, your airways swell up and let less air into your lungs.
• Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain put on your body by smoking often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure.
• Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers.
• Heart disease and strokes are also more common among smokers than non-smokers.
• Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels which leads to heart attack.
• Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease.
• In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking.

All this debate about banning and censuring is just not limited to smoking, there are a number of things in our society which we know are bad or good but does not suit the sensibilities of our times. Smoking is banned in public places even now but nobody cares. Why not is the real question? when one says " India ka kuch nahi ho sakta" they need to realise that they are the ones that make it. It all starts with one, as the famous ad "power of one" shows. It needs just one brave soul to say to the bystander that what you are doing is wrong- dont spit there are or urinate there or throw garbage there or cross the road when the signal is red or switch lanes or cross lines and the list goes on....Who would that soul be? YOU?

its good that smoking in public places in prohibited.
Sure, if someone wants a puff, go ahead and have it somewhere private, but please, please, PLEASE, don't put another's life at risk!!! Passive smoke kills as much as, if not more than, actually smoking.
im not saying smoking in general should be banned, coz its a personal choice. Just that, if u have to choose between life and death, what would you choose???

yes dear ..smoking really injurious to health ,in fact it weakens our memorizing capacity to things n appetite also.
some people says that it helps to regain concentration but real fact is that cigarette contains nicotine .usually our body produce nicotine as its physical requirement but when we take it externally our body stop to produce it ...n when we dont take it externally body shows immediate response to have cigarette ....n we fell comfortable after smoking .....n feel better concentration but if we leave it with in 5 days we recovered physiological need n then only phycological need persist thr ..
so friends try to quit cigarette ...n enjoy life

well all our non smoker brothers/sisters, who think smoking should be banned, think about this:-
1) have u ever seen ur mom worshipping god, and lighting agarbattis, dhup battis etc which release frangrant smoke, which is thought to purify the home and is an essential component of worshipping. same way we smokers take in cigrette smoke for the internal purification of our mind and soul.
2) smoking cigrette gives a relief to somkers and a sense of peace of mind which helps them concentrate better in work.
3) just like a coin all things in life have 2 sides. i mean some pros and some cons. if smoking have some ill effcts, then it urely do have some positive effects also.
4) try this out. if ur stomach is full. u overate, and now feeling ur tummy is very heavy. just have 2-3 long puffs of cigrette. and see tha magic.

Smoking or Non-Smoking...Should There Be A Choice? Imagine sitting in a restaurant unable to enjoy a meal due to the cloud of smoke coming from a neighbor's table. The fact that there was not a designated area for smokers has put the smoker and the non-smoker in an uncomfortable situation. Smoking should be banned in public places because non-smokers have a right to clean air, and because second hand smoke is more dangerous than actually smoking a cigarette. However, smoking should not be banned in public places because it is the smoker's choice to smoke just as it is the non-smokers choice not to smoke. President Clinton is quoted saying that "We've got to do more to protect people in public places and clean up the air that all of us share" (Rovner 571). For non-smokers, inhaling someone else's cigarette smoke can be very aggravating. It is bad enough that automobiles, processing plants, and other types of industries pollute our environment, but for a smoker to choose to smoke around a non-smoker is a violation of th
, reports that, "exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) raises a non-smoker's risk of developing lung cancer by at least 50 percent" (Health Article Magazine 65). If the nation would ban together as a whole, society could eliminate public smoking completely. Is that fair in a free nation? If public places would compromise and designate certain areas for smoking and non-smoking then maybe everyone could be in a public area and be comfortable or satisfied. In response to it being a smoker's choice to smoke, and the non-smoker's choice not to smoke shows that everyone is affected by smoking being banned in public places. The only effective way to avoid the negative effects of second hand smoke is to insist on a smoke-free environment whenever possible. Only the non-smoker can be completely satisfied. Non-smokers choose not to smoke and are left alone, while people who choose to smoke are told when and where they can smoke. Because there are now designated areas for smokers and non-smokers someone could enjoy a meal without being uncomfortable. California law now requires that all restaurants be smoke-free and that all bars become smoke-free on January 1, 1998". Second hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks by increasing a person's risk of developing blood clots. Non-smokers can encourage smokers to walk outside to smoke and open windows to keep the room ventilated to minimize the consumption of second hand smoke. American females have the choice to end a baby's life by receiving an abortion, therefore, smokers should not be inhibited from making a choice to smoke where they choose to do so. So, an effort has already become in some places to purify the air for those who do not smoke. As citizens of a freedom-based nation, the constitution encourages the right to freedom of press, freedom of religion, and, most importantly, freedom of speech.

the one who smokes wnot like to choose the alternate nicotine sources as we still eat dont go for concentrated capsules etc.. where ever u smoke pollution will be caused.. only point i liked is dat no one has right to disturb others by smoking in public as it may irritate the non-smokers..

I feel passive smoking is more harmful than the actual smoking, so i wish smokers be a bit more responsible & not smoke in public. I wouldn't want a ban on smoking, but a ban on smoking in public places should be strictly enforced

smoking, a bad habit that every smoker knows. The main thing is the kind of employment this industry creates.
Due to thins habit close to 5 lakh individuals are employeed. Also the goverment is making huge money out of it from taxes.
So I dont think it shld be banned, as the people are themselves aware abt it.

In my opnion, there should not be any prohibition on smoking on public places, instead it should come from within that one should not smoke in such places. It is the value system that lacks. Punishing is a reinforcement technique and these techniques are useless beacuse there are people who love to break rules.
Motivation is never second hand. It should be your innerself rather than someone imposing you to stop. :bounce::bounce:

I think it's a personal issue !! It mst be left to people to decide what they want to do, govt shud not interferein all these things and instead concentrate on more important things around.

cigrettes is mlign to health ....so it should be banned ,even smokers know about ill effects of it still continue to smoke ...some of them trying to quit smoking but aren't successful because of social network they possess ,government shoud come up with strict rules n regulation so that people start thinking it shud be prohibited

Nice to hear that the government is making some two pennies in excise duty and in th esame breath spending huge sums on advertising against the use of cigarettes. And what to talk of the huge spends that go in healthcare.

smoking should be banned in publlic places..but what is important is the execution how it can be done..
who is responsible for cathching these smokers at public places..
only just by creating a law there wont be any effects..
the law shud be ENFORCED strictly..
i aslo feel banning ssmoking @<hidden> places such as societies, parks, quaridors, lifts in the society area.. were small kids play around...

Public places I dont see the harm in smoking on the road. But in a pub or enclosed area then yes because thats when it can affect those around them.
But most of these places have special smoking zones so if by public you mean the roads then i don't see why a person cant do so.

Smoking causes a range of diseases never before suspected, including cataracts, acute myeloid leukemia and cervical, kidney, pancreatic and stomach cancers. In fact, smoking affects virtually every organ of the body. It has been known since decades that smoking is bad for health, but the current report shows that it's even worse.

Hello friends
I was reading the previous posts & came across high criticism from people trying to support the ban.
I would like to say
1) Did u wake up 1 fine day to realise that smoking kills. If it is so harmful then why was it not banned earlier. Bcoz govt earns through taxes.
2) If a ban is to be implemented why is it not been applied in the correct sense.
Why is smoking banned & not cigarettes? Bcoz govt cant bear the loses of taxes & Secondly employment.
The ban was just a mimic(stunt) to gain public support.
I have seen policemen smoking in public after the ban is imposed
3) For my friends who say second hand smoke (passive smoking) is harmful so it should be banned. Guys most of u use cars or bikes. The amount of pollution it causes is way beyond what cigarette smoke does.
so what has the govt done abt it .
I dont say it should be banned,
but does govt emphasize on PUC apart from the metros. the ans is NO.
The PUC machines are so old that it gives pollution under control certificate to a non polluting vehicle.
Infact apart from metros people dont even know whats a PUC.
What is the use of imposing bharat3 norms & Euro4 norms if the old vehicles are not fazed out?
4) To my friend who say abt alternative measures for the smoke of vehicles there are alternative measures like electric cars ......
DO YOU USE THEM ???????????????????
No. so it is not that u are highly concerned abt others health but u are just supporting it bcoz u dont smoke ...
Lastly my point is not that people should smoke or not.
I AGREE IT IS HARMFUL FOR HEALTH.
But things should be done by choice & not by force.
This is a democratic country & everyone has its right.
If the govt wants to ban this activity then they also need to ban other activities as well.
No personal grudges ......

Hey!
First thing i would like to say is Smoking is Injurious to Health.
Secondly, i agree that smoking can't be banned on one fine day.
But efforts should be put from our side to first make the non-smokers be firm on thier decision not to smoke, and slowly n surely we can curb the smoking habit of the smokers and make them to non-smokers.
Its a vision which we,as youngsters should create to make our country a better place to live in and these are the small-small steps which can lead to accomplish our vision.
So the first step is "To stop smoking at public places."
{Don't always think, do act. It's not necessary that the world will change in one second, it takes years to change the system. Just do Ur duty.}

GUYS I WAS SMOKING AROUND 30 CIGS A DAY FOR 10 YEARS. AND I JUST QUIT SMOKING A 3 YEARS BACK. I DID IT IN A DAY. THE CRUCIAL FACTOR WAS WHETHER I WAS SERIOUS ABOUT QUITTIN OR NOT. WHAT I DID WAS EVERY MORNING MY FIRST DEED WAS TO SEE A VIDEO ABOUT WHAT SMOKIN DOES TO UR LUNGS,COCK,HEART,BRAIN...SHIT EVERY DAMN THING IN YOUR BODY. IT HELPED ME KEEP OF THE INITIAL CRAVINGS WHICH MAKE U A BIT PSYCHED FOR THE FIRST 3-4 WEEKS. AFTER WHICH I STARTED JOGGING...COULD NOT RUN A MILE WITHOUT KILLING MYSELF HALF....STEP BY STEP...NOWADAYS I JUST STAY AWAY FROM SMOKIN AREAS...OR PASSIVE SMOKE... AND AM FEELING A FREAKING LOT BETTER....PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY...ALTHOUGH WHEN I TAKE A DRINK...I STILL HAVE SUB CON...EFFORTS TO SMOKE...

I am smoking 20 cigs a day for the last 7yrs .......... have attended quit smoking seminars, a friend bought me a cd from some institution in london that shows how cigrattes are made how they affect u .... the condition of lungs of a smoker & a non smoker ...
But stilll i am not being able to reduce to a packet a day ..... Dude what u did is gr8. not everyone can do it .......... & the main point I want to focus is that Ban on smoking was just a stunt & nothing else ....

& my main point is why ban smoking ....... ban cigarettes altogether ........ If a cigarette
is not available people will quit as it is everyone wants to quit but cant quit.
why leave the gun & then cry if someone shoots with it

maybe what the government should do is to ban ciggy's all together. they will face a lot of opposition from the tobacco lobbyists but they can be strong if the people rise up to the challenge and demand action against tobacco industry. the government might have to help the tobacco farmer get into alternative farming crops or some other way of earning a living. but the major oppositions will be the law making politicians who are gulping money down from the lobbyist the lobbyist are foreign and local... this is not a national level issues dudes.. the real string pullers are the multinational like ITC,PHILIPPMORRIS, ECT...
