View Full Version : Can 'Made in India' beat China?

There is a new twist to the 'India-China, who's better' story. A new report has said that 'Made in India' could be the next big economic story on the Asian horizon. The report, published by Capgemini Consulting Service, said that in the next 3-5 years, India, while retaining its IT hold, could challenge China as the world's manufacturing centre. With World Inc looking at India with a keen eye thanks to its IT prowess and its rising BPO wave, the India success story gets only reinforced. However, red-tapism, infrastructure bottlenecks, unfriendly government policies, not-so-great civic amenities and cheap labour have also seen a lot of companies take flight to China and other south Asian countries. From 'kirpans' to 'pichkaris', Chinese imitation of almost all kinds of Indian goods have invaded Indian drawing rooms, making the 'Made in China' tag a reality. In such a scenario, it remains to be seen whether Made in India can beat its Chinese counterpart or is it mere wishful thinking?

I don't think "Made in India" can beat china in such a small time.Besides the infra bottlenecks there is a big difference in consumption market b/w India & China.China's domestic market is very big when compared to India. Moreover there are also political mileage in getting your business running. It roughly takes about ~6-8 months to start a business in India whereas it takes only 80 days in China.China has about ~$73b exports only with US in manufacturing side.We don't have such big business with US.
Ofcourse India can catch this but I seriously doubt the timeframe of 3-5 Yrs mentioned. As of now,India is no threat to "Made in China" brand image.Still,China is a world's manufacturing hub and India is world's back office.

I also Think in Short Term Made In india wont Beat China...
But measures are taken By Indian Govt by imposing Anti-Dumping Duties to curtail Chinese Worst products from Entering in India.
This will help India we Survive.
Also in IT Indians are giving World Class Quality for Chinese to reach there it will take a decade..
They beilieve in Mass Prod and no Quality but in IT its quality for which Indian are still Ruling the BPO & KPO markets...
So Future Made in India will be used by whole Globe........

hello frds.........
you people are thinking right.about china........its not easy to beat china.............well i am a MBA student in China.....i am writing my thesis on India china Business relations.....
and the most real thing is India is not the 10% of chinese economy.......................i know India is growing....but what about the infrastructure.....health industry,...electricity....water...........we are still fighting with the basic needs of the people.........and the truth about china is .......i am living here from the last 3 years and i never seen a power failure for more than...10 mins.......
i know we are good.in service........but they are best.....in their work....means manufacturing.......
so.........it takes minimum to minimum 10 to 15 years to come to the level of china.............
think about shanghai...Beijing,,,Canton,,,, nanjing......we have no cities like them......
wellits a little intro abt china..........

Hello friends I don't think that the fight here was among the two countries the fight was with the product of the two....
Made in India is no doubt much behind Made in China but friends we Indians are the best in the service part.... I know that India is lacking in the Infrastructural part but according to FICCI and CII report the development of Infrastructure would be seen @ 8 to 10% more till year 2010...
I know this rate is much slow but then too not soon in the coming future but in later future we would be good in the manufacturing part too....
Defeating China or being defeated by China is not the major issue but friends what i think the major issue should be the growth.... growth in infrastructure... growth in education.. growth in R&D.. growth in hospitality...etc...
Come on friends lets make our country move in a better direction and allow our competitors to fight with us....

tats true but in case of services we have left china behind
today about a one third of doctors, engineers, n it professionals are indian
no doubt tat china is having a larger share of world product market nowadays but ourt share is growing
but the thing that we hav to concentrate on is quality bcoz eventoday indian goods are looked down on quality front

if there is a willingness to do something we can beat anyone but saying so what i feel is for India to beat China its has to upgrade its infrastructure.

It's not so easy to beat china,
I am in Handicraft sector, the goods are coming from China with a far better quality & very good services they provide to customer
India is lacking behind in Technology of Production
& level of Services.
They main differ because of Infrastructure facilities,
We can work with deficit of our requirement - Finance, Electricity,Skilled Labour, Avability of Good Quality of Raw Material etc.
They are cheap bcz. of one more reason that is
economies to scale, i.e. Large scale production enable them to bring down the fixed cost per unit, marginal cost of production is low,
Which enables them to get high marginal profits.
These are my views reagarding Handicraft Sector give your views

well i think india has to go a long way before it actually comes close to china in the manufacturing sector.. because of the very obvious infrastructure differences between the two countries. india is surging ahead in the knowledge intensive services sector and this is where i see tremendous future growth.

hi!
considering the pace of infrastructure developments in china, they definetely seem to be ahead in the race, but one should not forget that india enterd late into the race of globalisation, hence we shall continue to be behind china for coming 5-10 years atleast. However,it is upto our govt who has to take quick decisions and implement them in less time,as china is doing, inorder to overcome china some day.WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO,AND INSTEAD OF THINKING WHETHER WE CAN BEAT THEM OR NOT,IT IS TIME NOW TO ACTUALLY STAND UP AND DO IT!!

Although its a long run, in US I see few products like clothing for example which say Made in India. I say, India is on the bandwagon and hopefully sooner or later India woud beat china.

Hi Friends,
Regarding China, yes we all agree that in real terms China is far ahead in terms of manufacturing, infrastructure aand its big ticket spends on its public utilities.
but it is still not that competitive as it is not a Market economy,
India being a market economy is doing well in terms of the restraints posed by the market economy.
Also looking at the aspect that in China, the political system is different than India, therefore the delays in clearing infrs- projects happen,
So India is doing well in terms of its given fundamentals and if fundamentals are strong,"Made in India" will be a story in the near future,as what we have achieved in Bio-technological,Pharma,Service,Hotel industry.

yes i m sure that india has the right potential to outperform china in economic growth as well as in manufacturing volumes and cost.
the main cause of china excelling india is the efficiency of manpower there. Today Hongkong is better than London as far as infrastructure is concerned, nocomparisions wid india.
the need is tat we all collaborate and coordinate the growth in the right direction under effective leadership, rest assured

I am not sure whether India can catch up with china but India do what its best at ... producing better, cheaper and in bulk! not patriotic but real!

ppl we must understand that its more important to attain a sustainable development rather than defeating China,,,in future natural resources like petroleum will be unavailable hence we must concentrate on developing other sources which are eco friendly and wil also be more beneficial for our country in the long run
