A management student has know everything that happens around.Specially with regards to business. We can learn from them, all the articles that we study and evaluate and also put in our projects can come from news.
But if not news than atleast read the paper,i feel reading the news paper is much better than watching the news.It increases your reading speed and also helps in grasping things easily.
New>>>No issues...Very useful.

I think it is not compulsory but it is necesary for an MBA student to watch news channnel and other informative channel. as MBA is all about keeping youself updated with what is happening around specially in business world. These channels and business magazine are the medium through which you can keep youself updated. If you are aware of the things properly then you can use that awarness for the growth of your business.
Updated MBA student can bring good Metamorphosis rather then a normal student...That's why i think it is a necessary part for an MBA student....

The thin is between just an MBA student and a good MBA student. To make an effective manager, one needs to keep abreast with the latest happenings around the globe, and be tuned to all the necessary information.
News channels give a complete coverage on global news, financial news, stock markets, and there are many documentaries on various, social, economic and geopolitical affairs.
Hence, watching news channels is very much needed and its not just news channels, but also newspapers and magazines.

An MBA graduate is a business person. News chaanel helps them to keep update themselves like what is happening in corporate world. Like merger and acquisition. it also helps them to know why these things are happening, what are the motives behind that, so it helps to understand the business strategy of these business giant

Well i think it is very essential for an MBA student to be aware of all the happenings around be it business or anything else. But if i was to choose b/w watching a news channel and reading a good magazine or a newspaper i would rather choose the second one as very often the news channels do fail in covering at least 70% of the happenings around the world. It becomes the responsibility of each and every MBA student to gather all these business related information that will not only help him/her excel in whatever he/she does but also develop him/her as a responsible individual. And for this the management educational institutions in india must mould their students in such a manner that they will become or will the country's Most Brilliant Assets!

A manager is to manage things in light of various controllable and uncontrollable forces. Hence its extremely vital for him to know of all the uncontrollable factors so that he can b PROACTIVE rather than REACTIVE.
I was never personally fond of news channels however now things have transformed greatly . Its hard for me to gulp my day without browsing those breaking news.
However, the hindi news channels are smthng I prefer to maintain a distance with .( No offences meant)

according to me mba students need to apply their managerial skills.....more practically... dat is da reason why they have so many case-studies..wathching news related to business will not only keep them updated but also helps in tackling case-studies...the more they expose to business related topics the better and deep is the knowledge they get. so i believe every mba student must watch news channel

August 29th, 2007, 08:45 PM
yes ! i think that mba students must watch a news, they must know the current issues going in the business world. Instead of watching those stupid movies they must spend their spare time in watching the news channels like CNBC World, CNBC awaaz, IBN 7 etc... It'll really help them practically....

Ofcourse its necessary to view the news channel, forget MBAs, even other professionals have to keep abreast with the day to day ongoings within the nation and globally too. Any news whether at that time relevant or no will make its presence 1 day and that will be the most happiest day of our life.
So viewing news channel or for tht matter ne information makes a person breathe smoothly rather than having breathing problems.

Compulsion is the wrong word to use.
Should be "Necessary".
If not from the angle of increasing one's knowledge base at least
from the interview point of view, one should watch the Channels.

its not a compulsion in my point of view. but ya it surely adds to ur knowledge, especially the talks, the gd's that happen, the interviews of business people, actual pictures of the event.
i think it makes the topic more interesting and more presentable to know when u see in news channel than in newspapers.

well well... i wanna ask u one question.... it is good for a cricket(any player for dat matter football, hockey, boxing) to watch mostly cricket related stuff eg like rivals match, other tournaments...
2 reasons
1 it helps him to know more abt the game apart from wht he plays usually
2 he's really interested in it n wants it 24/7 (dats da game)
the same logic can b applied here.... MBA means an all-rounder smart-ass...
dats y u gotta hav knowledge abt all wht any other normal person may know and b able to atleast understand and speak on the topic.

MBA students should be aware of all general knowledge, current affairs and business news...... and for that it is necessary to watch news channels, to read newspapers & magazines, etc............
It helps a lot while doing projects and off course b4 d admission also....... in Personal Interview and Group Discussion, they might ask u any question related to current affairs and biz news..... to answer, u must know all things related to it........ So it is very necessary t owatch news channels esp cnbc, ndtv profit, bbc world, etc. ...............

It is always better to stay in touch with News channels.Spending 5 mins b4 a news channel will help the students to know what the issue is all about.Probably after getting an idea, they can read articles on several sources to know about the issue.Besides that watching pgms like "Big Fight" can help students to get a feel of GD.

See, You can put it this way around. Business Management is the kind of field where lot of what happens to you revolves around decisions. Decisions and more decisions. For all the decisions, moves and strategizing that you do, you need to have a solid information base. You cannot just decide on something because, you think its the "right" way. You have to have solid statistics. You MUST know your numbers.
For this, its important to be informed. That's the basic objective. Stay in touch with info.Know what's happening around you. Know what's baking at the hour and of course, form your own opinions on them. Its not just enough if you take everything in. You should be able to build opinions and get judgemental where required. The best source to stay in touch with info, all through has been That could be from News channels, live feeds across the internet or any other source. Stay informed. That's the bottom line. If you think something else serves the purpose better than news services. Go for it.
All the best.

i agree with all the members view that an mba student should aware about the scenario of business environment.because it is the world in which he has to live and has to work.
he follows the same kind of culture as shown in these news channels.
these news channels link the mba student with the practicle prepsoition of business. In the present scenario where there is so much cut throat competition in order to survive it is important to watch these news channels.
i also want to suggest that gd's organised in the newschannels like cnbc, ndtv etc.helps students to prepare themselves to give good presentations.which is a must in the present corporate world.
with these movie channels students should also go for magazines like 4p's,business world, business economy, business today etc.
thanks

More than a compulsion its a via media to be updated to the current affairs. Though we can also gather that news from other via medias as well.. But the point is we should be able to judge from all of it what is important for us to watch, read and remember.. Because now a days the media exaggerates and distorts the news which becomes irrelevant for us to know.. (in this case am not talking about the business news channels).. And apart from critcizing i just want to suggest that we all should be able to predict rightly what will be the further impact and the consequences of the news published on everything- ne it either Market, our lives, Country, company, Globally!!! What say??

its not mandatory that you watch only a news channel to keep urself updated with the things around you...all an mba grad need to do is to keep himself/herself abreast with all the latest things runing around them..the sources through which a person get informed are many like news channels, newspapers, radio etc....on the whole be alert with the things running around u that may be news business related latest inventions or nything the source can be nything but the motive is that an mba grad always need to be keep himself/herself tuned with the world.

SECURITY POLICY AT PAYPAL.COM
“Secure shopping is the motto of PAYPAL.COM, the security policies of PAYPAL.COM empowers and promotes its customers to do more and more of online shopping. As a fraud-prevention measure, we will send an email confirmation for every online payment that you make with PayPal. By this way we make you feel secure to online shopping.”
Security Tools used by PAYPAL.COM
Your security is one of our primary concerns. So we’ve developed powerful countermeasures and formed partnerships with other companies, all to help fortify your online security.
NEW Update Your Web Browser
Safer web browsers make it easier to spot fake webpages that try to get you to enter personal information and steal your account. One of the simplest and most important things you can do to protect yourself is to upgrade your browser to one with anti-phishing features – like Internet Explorer 7. It’ll take just a few minutes and you’ll be protected with the most up-to-date security available.
NEW Iconix Truemark Email Identification
Is an email real or fake? Iconix Truemark icons can help reduce the risk of email fraud by confirming the source of the sender. Ever wonder if that PayPal email is real? We’re working with Iconix to bring you Iconix email ID, which can reduce phishing by confirming whether or not an email, is really from PayPal. And it’s free.
PayPal Security Key
An extra layer of security that helps to protect you when you sign in to your PayPal and eBay accounts. We protect your account with one of the highest levels of online security available. Now, add an extra layer of security when you log in with the PayPal Security Key. It’s easy, secure, and portable – so you can access your account from just about anywhere.
It’s a device that generates a temporary 6-digit security code every 30 seconds. Use it every time you log in for added security.
NEW Email Authentication
With this new technology, you can be more confident knowing that emails from PayPal are actually from PayPal. PayPal has incorporated industry-standard email authentication technology to help better protect our users from fraudulent emails.
Best part of all, there's nothing for you to do. PayPal users get this at no additional cost. PayPal authenticates all its outgoing emails. This allows participating email providers to confirm that email claiming to come from PayPal is actually from PayPal.
PayPal Plug-In
The PayPal Plug-In lets you shop anywhere online, securely. In fact, because the plug-in sits on your web browser, it allows you to pay with PayPal even if a store doesn’t currently offer PayPal at checkout. Plus, the plug-in is designed to help protect you against fraud and identity theft. It generates a unique, one-use card number every time you pay, so your information stays secure.
Mac does not support the PayPal Plug-In at this time. However, Mac users can still pay with PayPal using the Secure Cards feature.
100% protection against unauthorized payments sent from your account.
As a PayPal user, you’re protected from any payment that you did not authorize.
• As a fraud-prevention measure, we will send an email confirmation for every online payment that you make with PayPal.

I believe, knowing the news is really not necessary whether you are doing an MBA or not. I think it's a normal living skill that you need to know what's going on around you. As far as question is concerned I will say it's not mandatory- however it will help to keep your general knowledge up-to-date.

Well it is absolutely necessary to be updated about the recent happenings specially in recent times...
But the tendency to have a knowledge about every topic on earth can be disastrous as it is not possible..so waht I suggest is to have focus on the field you are interested in like HR, Finance etc and keep tab of recent happenings in that domain with handy in depth analysis of some hot topics (like Lehman Bankruptcy).

The most important thing for any MBA grad is to keep himself abreast of the things happening around him in this so-called business world...be it reading news....watching news....or listening news....doesnt make ny diff as his prime response is to build an information database in his mind...so if wanna be an mba grad..... be informed....so watch, read, listen do nything but be informed about whazz happening round u....

i really don't think that it is a necessity for an MBA to watch news and be updated through television . Well television is one of the mode to get information and keep oneself updated , but business newspapers and magazines are one of the best mode of information and it also helps a person to imbibe a good habit of reading , which is of utmost important.Other than that , i think most of the Mba's have laptops and even if there are real good business programes , they can watch through Youtube.

i guess wit all the facilities like net and ET coming to door steps it is not necessary for a MBA grad to watch news channel...
but then wait a minute...he/she will miss out on the debates and real time emotions of the interviews!!!
but i guess if i take a stand i will say it is really not necessary...

According to me student of MBA has to learn in three fields during this course. they are 1)Personality2)Academics 3)General Awareness. So its not a question of whether to watch news or not but question is how much ur aware of any situation. we can information from Newspaper and periodicals too.
