In some of the companies, the time you work for counts for more than the actual work you do. Its becoming a fashion to stay late at office.

i feel that one need not sit late in the office at any point in the life. If the employee is sitting late in the ofice it means that there has been some mistake that is done by the manager of the employee. At any stage if a project if a manager makes even a small mistake the employess will have to suffer.(site late.)
It is not at all advisable for a employee to sit late.

Project deadlines may force occassional late sittings,
frequent late nighte sittngs are likely to tire out / burn out employees.
the problem could be understaffing, some employees being overloaded
and may reult in disruptive behaviour such as sudden casual / Sick leaves
or even resignations.

bad bad bad. Don't sit late in office. One yoga Guru told me that the new concept is to take a nap in the noon as well and it improves productivity. Some of the companies have started doing it. You should also if required work not more than 2 days long nights. The deprived sleep cannot be carried more forward than 2 days.

occassional late sitting in office is 5n....bt it shdnt become an habit...
late sitting in office need nt necessarily show ur sincerity towards ur wrk bt it cn also b taken as ur inefficiency in completing ur wrk on tym
n besides this it also indicate dat u consider ur tym less important than d company's tym...
so beware...late sitting in ur office can leave a wrong impression of u rather dan a good 1 ^_~

Mail sent by Narayan Murthy to all Infosys staff:
It's half past 8 in the office but the lights are still on...
PCs still running, coffee machines still buzzing...
And who's at work? Most of them ??? Take a closer look...
All or most specimens are ??
Something male species of the human race...
Look closer... again all or most of them are bachelors...
And why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!!
Any guesses???
Let's ask one of them...
Here's what he says... 'What's there 2 do after going home...Here we get to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee that is why I am working late...Importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!'
This is the scene in most research centers and software companies and other off-shore offices.
Bachelors 'Time-passing' during late hours in the office just bcoz they say they've nothing else to do...
Now what r the consequences...
'Working' (for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the institute or company culture.
With bosses more than eager to provide support to those 'working' late in the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback, (oh, he's a hard worker... goes home only to change..!!).
They aren't helping things too...
To hell with bosses who don't understand the difference between 'sitting' late and 'working' late!!!
Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working hours.
So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married and start having a family... office is no longer a priority, family is... and
That's when the problem starts... b'coz u start having commitments at home too.
For your boss, the earlier 'hardworking' guy suddenly seems to become a 'early leaver' even if u leave an hour after regular time... after doing the same amount of work.
People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labelled as work-shirkers...
Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays... though) leave on time are labelled as 'not up to it'. All the while, the bachelors pat their own backs and carry on 'working' not realizing that they r spoiling the work culture at their own place and never realize that they would have to regret at one point of time.
So what's the moral of the story??
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!
* Never put in extra time ' unless really needed '
* Don't stay back unnecessarily and spoil your company work culture which will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your colleagues.
There are hundred other things to do in the evening..
Learn music...
Learn a foreign language...
Try a sport... TT, cricket.........
Importantly, get a girl friend or boy friend, take him/her around town...
* And for heaven's sake, net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low (plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.
Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: *'Life's calling, where are you??'*
Please pass on this message to all those colleagues and please do it before leaving time, don't stay back till midnight to forward this!!!
IT'S A TYPICAL INDIAN MENTALITY THAT WORKING FOR LONG HOURS MEANS VERY HARD WORKING & 100% COMMITMENT ETC.
PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY SIT LATE IN THE OFFICE DON'T KNOW TO MANAGE THEIR TIME. SIMPLE !
Regards,
NARAYAN MURTHY.

Its really OK... As long as you are busy in your work, but when that becomes a regular affair a lot of frustration starts creeping in which is not good personally or professionally.

Sitting late in office shows that one is not competent enough to run or do the assigned work same as given to others, as others can finish their work by 6 and go home and the person who is sitting in office till 9 or 10 shows that he/she is not efficient.
Before marriage people sit late in offices cos they can speak to thr dear ones, but later after marriage if they leave early even after finishing ALL thr work BOSS thinks that he is not working hard these days..
but the fact is he/she is working HARD these days before he/ she was HARDLY working which is not noticed by the company.. so follow the company standards and stay when it is really needed which is good for u and also for the company.

Its not like that sitting in the office for late hours is healthy or not......... its all about achieving target within allotted time period or deadline. Time Management is the best solution for this

Sitting late becomes habit in some time if it is frequent and results in sluggishness in work coz one accepts that he has to sit late in office and keeps on pending work.
The most important thing is to realize work is just a part of life and we work to live and not live to work.

its not a matter of healthy or unhealthy, if one has to complete an assignment, he will have to do it, if he will not sit late in the office, the assignment will go to other day and other day same thing will happen, so, one has to finish the assignment if he finishes it early, he will not have to sit late, so it all depends on the person himself..

yeah late sitting in office should be avoided. Most of us spend lots of time in Food courts for breakfast, lunch and snacks. If we can reduce that time to some extent. we dont have to sit late even if the work demands

Work smartly rather than slogging.
Usually what you do matters, not how long you do.

According to me, late sitting in office is fair enuf wen there is actual need for it. Otherwise it just makes a habit bcomes a habit of bosses, n den causes unnecessary troubles.

sitting late in office doesn't mean that you are putting your 100%..working smart is better than slogging hard..time management plays a key role here, so in my view the mantra is: optimize your to-do list and work priority wise.

The Late sitting never contributes to success in any form. People are compelled to work late due to pressure from top level. For example a marketing person or the Accounts manager or Project manager promises the client about the deadline of a project without indepth knowledge of what exactly the client needs. Soon after when the project get started there would be differences at design phase itself. Then it is difficult again to get indepth details. when the project is at implementation phase again the problem arises with design team and implementation team. If the project is quoted for x amount the time needed for rectifying the problems are increased. so if the team size is doubled then the cost of project would be x+y. to save the y people are pressurised so that the y can be saved. some companies take freshers and give training and make them work day and night to save the y. so the problem here is y. This problem can be rectified if and only if our basics are correct. we must have a detailed approach on what ever we do at initial levels. A good approach is already in place with lot of concepts such as lean six sigma, etc. We does not properly implement those techniques. Another example is of a support project. The people are compelled to work on the dirty application. First of all the knowledge transfer of most of the leading companies are not sufficient. The people who are working has to do some research to get it going. There also the pressure makes people to sit late. The Documentation is also plays an important part in saving the time. But we does even go through the documentation.
