Today,SMS is the buzz word.while sending the SMS we are briefing the words to the max and we dunt do any punctuations. So the fact is that we are forgetting the punctuation part of a language.Even while writing in papers during Exams we tend to write like we do a SMS.This is not going to help us to learn the language. The ubiquitious use of SMS make people to forget about puncutations.More to it people esp students forget the spelling of certain imp words cos of this SMS culture. So wat to do abt it?
suggest sme solutions.
My take wud be to punctutate the SMS and write the words with the full spelling. Its gng to take a few secs more but your lang will nt deteriorate.

i support ur decision that sms should do justification to the rich literature. But the operators should also lift the word-limit to support the move.

SMS are meant to be used for instant connection or to message some private feelings!! so language formalities can be given leeway to some extent...wat say

SMS is real good tool for communication. sometimes wat happens is u cannot connect to other person`s network, in such a case u can sms it so that the message can be reached. Its very unfortunate that ppl dont understand the power of SMS...

Actually we need to see the other face of the coin as well before deciding whether SMS culture is good or bad.Remember the time when calculators were discovered at that time the teachers said the students will forget how to do the simple addition or multiplication if they continiue to use these devices. You tell me dont you know to two add two numbers without using the calculator.Similarly there was a time when shakespear wrote his novels, you compare the language he used with today's one.It is the need of the time we have to adapt ourseves with new technology & new time.

Hey,
I'm not blaming the Technology here. You can use the mail communication and use can very well use the mobile phones with the SMS.All it matters is how you write the SMS or rather you can write a "later" in SMS than writing as "l8r."

This depends from person to person.Thereare cases where some prof have told me that the juniour college students have been writing their exams in a sms slang language. All sort forms. It should not be made or called a culture. In culture we see things only thats best for us. Using shortforms is appropriate ,thats why we use it.But ...not culture..

noways melory c i know using shortfrom is the appropirate way to send an sms like who has time to write the long words ha
but not in paper i disagree c our papers should be systamatic and imagine a paper full of shortform nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh (imagine the pain that out profs will take to read them)
i still cant understand why u ppl blamin the sms here only neways it is we who use the shorform n not only in sms but now mostly everywhere neways this is just a habbit get out of it

SMS is one way that youth can express who they are, text messaging is definitely a new way for youth to connect. Many say that text messaging is bad for youth because it disconnects them from social development in the "real" i.e. verbal, sense. However, text messaging is a vehicle that helps youth express themselves in ways they never have before. Its just a mode of communication.....and not the way to learn language

i think the sms culture is good,,as the woed itself says short message,,,but i think 1 shud know how and where to use these short words...if u r saying tht in paper students use this language so its their mistake,,,they shud hv presence of mind atleast in paper,,they cnt b so absent minded tht they can use short language wherever they wnt..so its all abt the way a person uses it..

sms buzz is probably seems to be a good culture.. Its basically sends the message to the opposite party within a min ... If a person found himself to be a busy in meeting then the sender has to send a sms to inform him...

Obviously any new technology comes with its set of pros and cons....The use/lack of it depends on the convenience it offers....the very fact that SMS/chat culture is 'this' popular reflects the benefits it offers...the flip side though is what is evident from the very posts above in terms of the language and the abbreviations used..

i feel today most of us are so accustomed to using the 'SMS Language' that I know of a friend who had used 'u' instead of you, 'v' instead of we, 'r' instead of are in one of the slides during an important presentation, which resulted in him getting lesser marks.

SMS language is ok. One has to know the circumstances under which they are involved in writing something. If they are in an exam, they should remember to use the appropriate words in full. If they are sending a text message, they can cut short the words or use some short hand that gives the same sound wothout losing the meaning, as long as message is communicated.

SMS itself is a short form of SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE.
we cant say tht sms culture is good or bad.
as it depends on the person who uses the system.
the service is meant to convey a short message within quick span of time.
in today's busy world, it is necessary we adapt to short forms for quick conversations and transactions.
but at the same time, we cant forget what we were taught in the LKGs and schools.
adapt to the change. ..at the same time, dont forget the learnings.
we need to adapt to the SMS culture but at the same time we shud nt forget the language culture.
this is wht i wanted to say.
according to me, sms culture is not bad.

None of the modern inventions of science is without its own share of flaws , but when the positives of a particular invention is on the higher side we consider that thing as good . The sms culture is one such thing which has got a good share of +ves. It helps us to keep in touch in this fast paced world where writing long letters is a passe.

Yes for sure, it is affecting the written form of the language,, but not only that it is affecting the mind leading to short incomplete sentences that do not put forward the right meaning of what has to be told...
I would ask readers to use the T9 dictionary to make complete sentences while writing an SMS.. It improves your vocabulary and gives you different options too.

i think sms culture is good as long as the messages get delivered on time, but if mis-communication starts to arise due to late delivery of messages then its bad for us.

This could not be a case of black or white - of absolute good or bad. SMS lingo too is an evolution of language - of communication. Although a few purists would be objecting to it, but they ignore the fact that even the language in present form has evolved from a past form and was not acceptable to many. So, SMS, if used properly - as communication between those who understand the common words between them - is a perfect medium of communication. But in business usage, especially with those from other cultures, a formal usage and tone always yields the best results.

Like everything ,SMS also has advantages and disadvantages ,it is upto the person who uses it to make it advantageous for himself or to be harmed by it.
SMS saves a lot of time by using informal language and abbreviations but the person who is using it should restrict himself to use that language only to some extent and he should not make it a habit to use it everywhere and by doing so he will be able to write differently at different circumstances .

SMS is an easy way of communicating to people, it has a higher accessibility to different users, this is realized by different marketing guru's who have started using sms as a marketing medium
It does affect our language usage, but at the end of the day, it is quick and easy tool of communicating.
productive methods of using sms can be developed to overcome its drawbacks.
