Will India be ready to have a female president?
I don't see why not? when it can have a female prime minister in the past, why not a president now?

sure melroy !!
Actually in such a topic there are no pros and cons... but merely a difference of opinion.
First of all, India has been a country where women have the age-old status of being a house wife... That is why they're also called 'grahni' or the one who manages the house. Hence, the vote bank, which largely includes rural masses still have the concept that women can do good only in the house, not outside....
Yet politics can give a number of examples, like, Indira Gandhi, Hillary Clinton, Rabri Devi, etc. who have come out of the so-called 'char diwari' and took the reins of the country, their region, etc. Hence, such examples can be used to brand the new image of women... not just home maker, but the world maker.
This can actually help in solving many women-issues and can help in the upliftment of women to certain extent (with the new image they can gain)
I think campaigning from this point of view can actually be very meritorious if handled in the right way.
p.s. Melroy, a GD is won depending on how much input u can put, how subtly a topic can be discussed... The more the number of distinct points, u give, the better are ur chances.

@<hidden> melroy : i really am amused by the GD topics you get!!
ok. back to the topic:
wat is bothering us?
capabities of a female or merely a nt so feel good thought of female holding a top job?
if its first ;lets me clear that if she is nt capable enough no body wud be idiotic enough to suggest her name. she would nt have got immense support from our so called smart politicians who are well versed with diplomacies and foul plays!!
if its second then nobody can actually help it out as its a mindset taht needs to be changed.many people have already chnaged tahts y they are suggesting her name!!!:)
take care

Is India ready to have a female president?
Why this topic is being discussed, do we need to discuss such topics, I don’t think so that in any civilized society, there should be any such talk. Women are no way lesser than their male counterparts, why there is so much hoolaboola being created for a presidential candidate who happens to be a woman.
Was she a first choice?
Was there really any intention to have a women president?
I afraid the answer to both these questions is a plain NO.
So it should not be a question is India ready to have a female president, but it should go like this, why there was no women president in 60 years of independence.

Well whenever a question of governance comes, there should never be any debate on the male-female front. In my opinion, its the maturity level, the leadership quality, the educational background and the ability of an individual to connect herself/himself with the masses are the ones to be considered.
Pratibha Patil must have had the capabilities to be nominated in the first place, and once she has, its now the responsibility of our ministers to judge her on above qualities with her counterpart . We all had a example of Late Mrs.Indira Gandhi in front of us , who had been one of the finest Prime Minister India has ever produced. Not only in politics, we have good female leadership in other spheres also, be it Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Shahnaz Hussain or Naina Kidwai all have proved more than worthy of their respective positions .So, it all narrows down to one's ability and maturity to handle a position.

yes,she shouldnt act as a puppet like rabri devi to the male politicians.
hey please donot compare pratibha patil to people like rabri devi.........she is much more talented and educated then her.........being a lawyer, ex-governer and deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha............to be compared to rabri devi is simply not fare.
and as far as the question of women being a president is concerned..........i think its high time when people need to start thinking practically and forward..........instead of taklin about and comparing her with the other candidates on the basis of gender ................ why cannt we just compare her with the opponents based on her abilities and achievements. which she has........

Will India be ready to have a female president?
I say, India is not concerned about the gender of the president.
INDIA IS WAITING FOR A GOOD, CAPABLE, DESERVING, COMPETENT AND AN OUTSTANDING PRESIDENT be it a man or a woman!

When India can have Woman Chief Minister Decades ago (Sucheta Kriplani in 1963, she became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), and Woman Prime minister (Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi who served as Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 to 1984) why not woman President ?.
But the main problem lies in the way the Present woman candidate is selected.

Guys get over the male female stuff if a person is capable then that person should be the president also to be noted is that the role of the president in India is largely ceremonial and has no real powers. Max can send bills back to parliament but if returned back has to sign.

Such desicions cannot be based on HOPE or Gutt feelings....It has to be 100times thought of and implemented. So even if a president is gonna be a woman! she will surely be capable of handling the nation wether indian peep like it or not! :D

The fact of the matter is that India should be ready for a President who can stand up for the country and take the right decisions by not being swayed by political interest only , but by really what the masses of this country need -be it a woman or a man

its not about being a male or a female.. I guess the president in our country does have all the silent powers with him.. he is not as powerful as the country's prime minister.. thus I dont see with the current constitution.. things improving much!
