INTRODUCTION
In the wake of rising incomes, it would be imperative to take a look at trends in bank credits and deposits over the last few years. In 1993-94 the deposits were Rs. 1, 12, 000 crores and taking an average growth rate of 14.57% they are projected to be Rs. 3, 40,000 crores by the year 2001-02. Credit shows a similar trend moving from 62, 500 crores in 1993-94 to a projected figure of 1, 80,000 crores by 2001-02, growing at a rate of 14.15%.
The rising incomes coupled with increasing credits and deposits are clearly indicative of a significant opportunity waiting to be tapped by the private sector and foreign banks.
