Entrepreneurship is the fututre......

"Two roads diverged in the woods;
and i took the one less travelled...........that has made all the difference.."
- Robert Frost

To all those who admire the Wealth of Bill Gates, founder, Microsoft, the Enigma of Steve Jobs, the Timeliness of Warren Buffet, this might just speel a nirvana for you in the comming paras'

With India climbing on the growth indices, crunching on the mind boggling investments, expectations have reached their zenith. Never before did we witness such a scenario wherein people are unitedly acting towards the growth engine rather than just being a passive audience.

Ours has been a country where every second person has been concerned about India taking over China or optimistically concerned about the stock market
bubble"

"Till Date, we enjoyed Political Freedom, time will come when we will have econmic freedom....."

But then still we are posed with Numerous Questions.......Initiatives like Lead India are still grappling with the people's presence.......India Poised campaigns rather go unnoticed......no we are not advocating the media....but rather the message....

Solution is still a distant and myriad dream....but have methods....and one of them simply is "Start"..... (Entrepreneurship)..

"You must be the change you want to see in the world......Mahatma Gandhi".

Entrepreneurship....

It is clear that entrepreneurs can transform societies by adding economic dynamism, setting them on their way to increasing prosperity. It is also very clear that the same entrepreneurs are the only source of new wealth and productive jobs in the society...hence the effective step was going a step further....

To have a microscopic learning, we joined hands with TIE...the school of entrepreneurs hosted in the Capital getting entrepreneurs from all the walks of country be it IT, or Consultancy etc. the event is more or less like MP...where people come...they discuss....interact....but here the difference being that of Entrepreneurs......

Held from 11th- 13th of this month....this event simply raised the learning experiences...as we saw, met people who started way before we were born....the following are the events that unfolded.....sit back...read and feel inspired...

Session 1:
The summit was inaugurated by Hon. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, wherein he addressed the grave and desperate need for Entrepreneurship, in the country like India. Concerned about the Growth indices, he said that the only panacea to have a few more entrepreneurs, which can improve the country a lot better.

Mr. Ahluwalia also stressed on bare basics of education to send the right messages, assuring that Govt. spending will and has to increase from 7 % in past to the tune of 20-22% . That was phenomenal and to some…..the right start of the summit. After all somewhere in the hearts of heart we all believe: every child is special: Taare Zameen Par......

The atmosphere was nothing less than inspiring as this was not even near to a political speech....rather Mr. Ahluwalia was playing a friend or a person concerned about what the future has in store....no mean achievement.

Session 2:
The Next Programme on board was Investment Eco-System, where the bench consisted of prominent people like
Ø Mr.Rahul Bhasin, Managing partner, Baring Pvt. Equity Partner
Ø Deepak Kamra, General Partner, Canaan Partners. They are prime investors in Acme Packet, Allbusiness.com, Bahrat MAtrimony, Concord Communication, Double Click, Iprint.com, Latitude Communications etc
Ø R.M. Malla Chairman and MD , SIDBI
Ø Raman Roy, MD, Quattro. Considered widely as the Father of the Inidian BPO Industry. Has been working in the Industry for past 16 years.
Ø Sandeep Ghosh, MD and Head Global Commercial Banking, CITI India
Ø Alok Mittal, MD Canaan Partners

The session mainly focused on spreading the awareness about the possible bottlenecks that an entrepreneur undergoes.
It might be ranging from Grave Issue like Financing to more Graves like Economics of Dollar Rupee Parity or Technological Dilemma.

Raman Roy especially highlighted the fact of having a Right Team Mix when starting up. Even a good idea can go haywire if the right people are not working on it. But Mr. Roy was pretty candid and could not help addressing the problem of financing by saying..: “of the 5 people present on the bench, 4 are there to sign the cheques”

Although the statement was in humorous form, it did highlight the crux that Venture Capitalist are not for Charity, Either Sell Your Ideas or Fail. Thats how a Society will Progress.

Eventually the Session Highlights were the following Points:

1) It is that Difficult to Start the Business when you really want to.
2) When Hiring somebody, don’t visualize beyond a year. And Create a right team of People. VC’s like to get involved in the project rather that get money involved.
3) Look for the previous streaks of excellence doesn’t have to be necessarily academic.
4) Lastly, be result oriented, value oriented, innovative, generalist, risk taking, persistent, efficient, competitive, and opportunistic. Etc.
5) There will be tough times to handle, but then that's what entrepreneurship is all about, one of the fact shared here was that Infosys, when it was just about to start, was given an approval of the feasibility report by a Renowned bank, and the lending arm of the same bank thought other wise and did not lend to Infy. as the result they has generate from personal sources.

Learning from the session was enormous as it opened the gate as to what the Industry people are looking at and what do they want.

Moral of the Story : We have a lot to Learn.

Session 2: Investment Trends in Technology:

Bench :
Ø Pradeep Kar, Founder, Chairman and MD, Microland. Serial Entrepreneur founded Planetasia, First professional services company, Indya.com, net brahma.
Ø Vispi Daver: Partner, Sierra Ventures. Company has $1.5 bn under management and has been is existence for last 25 years.
Ø Kalpana Jain: Senior Director- Financial advisory services, Deliotte.
Ø Jai Das, Partner, SAP Ventures. Focuses on the Open Source and Digital Media Investment opportunities in the US.
Ø Uday Challu - Co- Founder and CEO, IYogi. Direct to consumer business which provides computer support via phone and remote access for home and small businesses users .
Ø Anish Tripathi. Chief Knowledge Officer, KPMG
Ø Dan Sandhu, Chairman, Vertex India

This Session basically involved an active interaction on the Technological Aspect which the businesses require. The bench saw an immense potential of using SAP Based products for SME or Businesses by designs. That also means that companies trying for new products or for emerging markets can have their logistics, supply chain and even in mobile technology.

The Bench was also convinced that India, China and US together comprised a plethora of opportunities and particularly portals like Jobsites and Matrimony offer a great scope.

However there was also stress laid on Mobility and Flexibility of such systems.

An important stat which came out in this session was that only 1 in 10 start ups usually lasts in the first 12 months, of the survivors, perhaps only 1 in 10 start ups usually last the nest 12 months. Hence all in all, 1 in 100 usually do well thereafter unless they too become complacent or really goof up.

Session 3: Consumer Businesses :

Bench:
Ø Rajeev Samant, CEO, Sula Wines,
Ø Ashish Kapur, MD, Moods Hospitality;
Ø Mahendra Swarup, Cheif Mentor and Chairman, Smile Interactive.

Given the way the day has unfolded, we did not expect what was to happen next. but if we really had any, at the end of this session, it would have rather been largely, grossly undermined.

This was one of the best sessions of the day, we guess, but we let you decide after reading the following:

Rajeev, CEO of Sula Wines had a long walk down the memory lane where not only did he share the ups and the downs but also what it takes to get there.
Working as a finance manager in Oracle, in San Francisco was some how not at all convinced with the roles he was playing. At the peak of his career, he left the job and came back to India.

This humble but ever trying guy had not thought of what he was going to do. (Does somebody remember Steve Jobs!)

It is said that real test of man is in disparity, but we guess that was a very small word for him. Rajeev went to roots of rural India. He started growing Mangoes as his first try (a year after returning from states) in his family owned plot at Nashik. He confessed that even this start up was an accidental thought and hence met with a tragic end.

Try again said some one, and he started with growing Tomatoes for exports. and when it came to business, even tomatoes bore the same fruits as did mangoes. Even this venture failed.

But finally he was rather convinced of the story of Wolf saying the Grapes are sour..........
what....did i hear Grapes...yes it was only good badluck twicew, did he had his hands on Grapes.

Thus born was the concept of Sula wines. (Sula has reference to his mother 'Sudha')

He actually confesses that his idea of planting grapes and then brewing wine was quite weird....but that made sense to us only when he said "Boss, it was in 1997"

Adding that No bank was ready to lend him a start up loan amount. The figure stood at 30 lacs Rs. but eventually Saraswat bank agreed only when the entire property held by Samant Sr. was entirely mortgaged.

But even thereafter, our Traditional Govt was not ready to give away the License to the brewer. How can they.....when they had not issued a single license in last 15 years.

But Rajeev patiently convinced them, if they by any means intend to see rural areas get off a boosting start and to see them prosper, the Govt. should grant them one.

Finally, Govt. gave in and that brewed a perfect Sula Wines and Vineyards.

But this was just the beginning, Rajeev says. After getting the license he made even others had the same opportunity. He says playing mean was not his way.

Production wise, Sula's were the best wines, but they were premuimly segmented (expected if read the above), he said that in the first year they were able to sell only 450 bottles. And the financial projections submitted to the Bank, the target which they were supposed to achieve in the 1st year, they got their in 3rd.

Finally, due to scaling up and increased efficiency, Sula broke the market in 2003 and then went to a next success story.

Finally we were pretty impressed by Samant Jr.'s Thoughts, given what he to face, this guy was no doubt a pure maverick and of different mettle, but his way is...partnering with workers on field. Yes, Sula has partnered with each and every worker they have employed and that’s their formula of success, and we thought, it was wines.

Today, Sula has firmly established itself as India's premium wine brand,

On resting his words, his thoughts were pretty apt: " i cant imagine anyone who is happier with his job. hugh hefner perhaps," says the effervescent ENTREPRENEUR with a twinkle in his eye.

Next to come was Mr. Ashish Kapur, MD, Moods Hospitality, founder of the concept of Yo! Chinese, with its tagline of "Chinese Food. Chinese Prices ', Yo!China aims to deliver high quality chinese foods at value prices served in an international ambience.

Here Ashish emphasized his way Indians spend on food esp. Chinese food and thus was inspired to launch by seeing a wide disparity amongst local Chinese (red dragon) makers.

Moral: Its not unusual to think why ask entrepreneurs the reality : ideas get churned over time and business plans on excel sheet rarely look the same from one quarter to another in a startup's life. What appears visionary in hindsight is actually smart tactics of people who have actioned at the speed of the thought.

Finally the day ended with handover of Data quest awards and that is how we eventually figured out Capital's Cold climate and scenic arena.

Day 2 : 12th December

Being a management student, this day was not be missed by us, Keynote Speaker was Prof. C.K.Prahlad, and the subject was Essence of Development - Entrepreneurship

True to the topic, Prof.Prahlad addressed that Successful entrepreneurship is not a illusion, but it is composed of several ingredients. Targeting the right macro-opportunity is a good starting point but being a first mover is no longer sufficient for success in today's world.

Market leaders of tomorrow, will be companies that will have the ability to scale up their operations without diluting the quality and economics. Most business are setup with objective of trying to address an unmet need or an already met better need. But then being in sync with your customer during the scale up is a must as it helps in optimal allocation of your capital and in timely course correction

Commenting on India's demographic advantage, he said that the Young have the flexibility to adapt, absorb and conceptualize and innovate. This is the key ingredient of technological and economic progress. China has large supply of new workers for private enterprises but these workers are basically state owned are older and are not as adaptable as the young labor market of India. Population trends are not easily reversible and here the advantage goes to India.

He also presented his latest "The Innovation Sandbox" which focussing on being market driven and emphasizing on Bottom of Pyramid Practices.

Session 2: Entrepreneurship and Election Management:

Bench:
Ø Shri N Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner, GOI
Ø Saurabh Srivastav, TIE Delhi - Host

Infused the audiences interest in democracy by being a slightly disappointed given that it was election time and turnout was a mere 60 %.

Mr. Gopalaswami admitted that if India was ever to attain a status of superpower that it cannot be attained with out developing the Government.

Also that Political machinery is a part of Economic Efficiency; hence improving Government also is responsibility and duty of entrepreneurs.

Mr. Gopalaswami added an unpardonable satire when someone from the audience asked, "Should there be a minimum education limit for standing in election?"
At which, he calmly responded "There is no reason for that, not until Voter's turnout increases, or people become more responsible".....
But he added that personally, candidates standing from election should have minimum level of education that completely changed the bureacratic image of Govt, we had.
A second sign of India Changing
Session 3: Lifestyle Entrepreneurship
Bench:
Ø Mr. Yogi Durlabhji, KS Durlabhji. He Has the distinction of being in "Outstanding People of the 20th Century", A Leader of Influence
Ø Maharani Gayatri Devi, Rajmata of Jaipur
Ø Leander Paes,
Ø Raghavendra Rathore - Designer, His couture line reflects his states vibrancy (Jaipur), he has formalised Sherwani etc
Ø JJ Valaya, HOuse of Valaya
Ø Vanadana Luthra, Founder and Mentor – VLCC
Ø Raj Jaswa, President, TIE Silicon Valley.

Again this session was a great value addition. Lifestyle Entrepreneurship is basically a vocation, profession or any activity which a person likes to do even though it cannot be that big.

The session kicked off with the Bench explaining what made them take, why and thus making every attempt to justify their success story.

Many a times, would be entrepreneurs spend more time and energy trying to find out what they should be doing. if one has to ask this question, one is probably yet not ready for becomming an entrepreneur.
in India, today opportunities exists everywhere, and the gifted entrepreneurs will be the first to spot them.

but the bench of ours felt nothing like that. THis bench just that some day or the other this idea will work for them, they never know a particular time frame, but had a belief.

This also bought an interesting fact to the light, it is important to keep in mind that no mean achievement requires tremendous sacrifice, exceptionally hard work and an unflinching determination to succeed, the resilience to accept and learn from failures and then bounce back and solid commitment to core values.

Unless starting with the golden spoon (no pun intended), it also means frugal lifestyle and being the jack of all and master of many.

Who would have Paes to play Tennis, and still expect stardom.......but then self-beliefs play the most important role, when VLCC was started, nobody saw it as promising but then it persisted till date making the most of it.

Moral : To Unlearn is still "To Learn..."

The true spirit of entrepreneurship was defined by the Bench. Remarkably by Paes and by Rathore.
Paes when asked that his career was on decline and now what he see the future as.....to which Paes responded, if the future seems bleak..doesnt matter, " i have a plan of creating a sports infrastructure in various regions thus promoting sports as equal option to any thing that is worth DOING...."
Similarly, Raghavendra too seemd keen on getting Local Vogues to being recognised.
Session 4: The Prism of New India:

Bench :
Ø Dr. Kiran Bedi, IPS
Ø Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chairman, CERT
Ø Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudalaya.
Ø Kanwal Rekhi, MD, Inventus Capital Partners.

Another Invigorating Session, this reached to the peak and still asked us...."Want More..?"

Session started with Dr. Devi Shetty showing some Videos, that are Narayana Hrudalaya's Initiatives (NH is also discussed in Bottom of Pyramid for its Cost Effectiveness)

One of the Videos had that in Rural Areas People are unable to have an ECG analysis; to this NH initiative was they developed software, through which a local doctor can have free access, get the ECG test done, and then upload the same to NH's Website via Software.

The Doctor's team at NH would then study and reply within 24 hours. That’s entrepreneurship.....they receive on an average, 400-500 ECG reports daily.

Second Video showed that Farmers getting insured through the NH's Initiative. Normally a farmer would never think of getting insurance, and even if he does, the premium package or the company are simply out the reach, hence NH Tied up with Indian Post Offices in rural areas and now any farmer could now make an insurance policy available at the premium of Rs. 10 per month, valid for 5 years. That was truly inspiring.

Now, if even this was not enough, NH also opened its Rural Clinics (Could also be the place not utilized in the village), where they would Teach and employ the local people as Nurses, etc, and also made tie ups with Medical companies for Genuine Medical Care.
For the NH is trying to tie up Godrej so that other genuine facilities are also made available. Now Arent these Guys E-Choupals (Entrepreneurs) of India.

To add to the magic of it, it was now Kiran Bedi's turn. The first lady police still has same grace, same vigor which she had in 1980's.
When asked by a lady in the audience, that local police are harassing her just because she is a teacher and wants to educate the children, but the locals are not comfortable with this action of hers and have registered a Police Case.
As the result the Police are also now against her, not allowing her to continue with the Social Build Up.

To this Dr. Bedi Replied;"Tell the Police, This is None of your Business, better be out of it". She also gave an example to it......

While working in Tihar Jail, in the earlier period of her career, the prisoners were not allowed to read or write. but she was the first to make the authorities realise the dire need that in order to change the people, they need to be educated.
thus bending or changing the rules of the games......emphasizing that People should come forward to take active reforms even if they are radically driven in the interest of humanism and only then can India progress
This was another Feather to the Cap of Genuine Leadership....better done than said.
That ended the 2nd day, whoa...

Ø Saurabh Srivastava - TIE Delhi.

of opportunities still in the store. Be it logistics or be it knowledge management. Pramod Bhasin also was a defender in this case.

Session 4:
This session was by far the gem of the day, as HCL Founder Shiv Nadar was to be Interviewed by prominent Ms. Shireen Bhan. (CNBC, TV 18 )
Shiv although was himself, a shy guy, shared how HCL was started and what actually went in to making it. HCL a leading manufacturer in IT in 1980's suddenly had to see the downfall,
and well that's the only thing Shiv wanted to change, but then Company realised that software and internet were also a major driving factors that cannot be missed upon.
