Bureau Of Indian Standards (BIS)

The BIS the National Standard body of India, is a statutory body to set up Bureau of Indian Standards Act 1986.

It comprise of members representing the Industry, Consumer Organization, Science Research Institutes, Professional Bodies, Technical Institutions, Central ministries, State Government, members of Parliament.

The Indian Standards are formulated keeping in view national priorities, programs, for industrial development, technological needs, export promotion, consumer welfare, health, safety etc.

Product Certification: The product certification is basically voluntary and aims at quality, safety, and dependability of the ultimate customer. Conformity is ensured by regular surveillance of the products performance, by surprise inspection and testing of samples.

Eco Mark: The Government of India had instituted in Feb 1991, known as ECO mark scheduling and labeling environment friendly products. BIS administer the scheme.

Quality Management System Certification (ISO 9000) – BIS is a national agency authorized to operate systems certification in India. It has adopted ISO 9000 series of standards as IS 9000 series Indian Standards aligned the procedure for operation of Quality System Certification, based on international criteria comparable to any other such system being operated.

EMS certification: With the growing concern for environment friendly activity, ISO 14000 standards have been developed. BIS after adoption of these standards as national standards has launched Environment Management System (EMS) Certification (IS/ISO: 14001)

HACCP Certification: BIS launched HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) based Quality Certification schemes as per the requirements of IS 15000:1988 standards.

Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery – In order to protect consumers against victimization of irregular gold standards, Hallmarking of gold jewellery was launched under BIS Act 1986.

The BIS has chain laboratories located at different parts of the country for conformity testing of product samples offered by applicants for grant of license, which is essential feature of BIS certifying system.

For wider adoption of Indian Standard by the industry, BIS has formulated a plan which emphasize on:

Development of Complementary level of Standardization

Effective implementation of standards by sect oral committees, such as steel, food, textiles, information technology.

Use of Indian standards in legislation
Greater interaction with public and private sector undertaking.

Bulk public purchases based on standards and standard marked products.

BIS is a founder member of International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
To provide training in the field of standardization, quality control, quality management system, environment system, laboratory management etc.

To keep an eye on misuse of standard mark, an Enforcement department is functioning at HQs, with co-ordination officers in Ros and Bos. Complaints on misuse of Standard Mark are investigated by the Enforcement Department and appropriated legal action is taken.

The operation of Bureau in the Western Region comprising of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman are looked after by the Western Region Office located at Mumbai and the branch office at Pune, Nagpur, inspection at Aurnagabad.

The industry is invited to avail the services offered by the Bureau from its various offices in Maharashtra.
