Hey Guys
This is to introduce the MP Think-tank Contest where we will deliberate over key issues every month and the best minds will be rewarded with a Thinker of month certificate from MP. This month's issue is about thinking of alternate ways of freeing India of its dependence on Fuel prices in the long run. We acknowledge that the situation in the short run impedes any revolutionary steps but we as the future of this country must evaluate different options to ease the forex burden on account of the crude bill on the country.

So lets set the ball rolling and listen up from the ignited minds. We have not kept any structure to the contest deliberately in order to promote creative ideas and the Editorial Team at MP will select the winner on 31st March 2008. So claim your intellectual space and let us know what u think.

This question is really a matter of concern for all of us as a concerned citizen of INDIA....I think that if we want to get rid of high fuel prices then for this all of us should work as a team, because if we will think that government will do something for us then situation will not improve... it is really very important for us as an individual to work on this cause...
for this we could take various steps such as
1. we should always try to use public mode of transport such as buses, metros, rikshas instead of taking out our own car where ever possible.. because public transport is very easily available nowadays....

2. while going to same location everyday(colleges, offices, schools) we should always try to pool 2gether and use only one vehicle instead of using our own seperate vehicles.. it would not only save our money but also our resources which is our property or u can say our investment

3. Every parent should ensure that his child is not misusing a vehicle which is meant for commuting purpose by riding it just for fun....

4. and the most important is that seperate and wel mantained track for cyclists should be made and the myth that cycling is a mode of transport for a poor man should be removed and everyone should be encouraged to use cycling as a mode of transport atleast for shorter distances of 5km ...
it would also be good for our health

i would suggest invest more on oil exploration and also go in for any other comparatively low cost oil production countries..

i have some solutions
1)Let us get in reservation here. Let us price Petrol as per the caste of the person. Like OBC can pay 50% of what it costs the oil companies, SC and ST can be provided the same for free. The General category should be rationed and provded petrol and deisel at 200Rs per litre. Cos they have in the past had the luxury of travelling by some vehicle or the other while the OBC and SC/ST has to crawl or walk. So we need to provide them with the necessary opportunities. We can also charge Petrol depending upon the car that the person drives, like if he dives a luxury car costing more than 20 lacs, they can be charged at 500Rs/-, 10 to 20 lacs can pay 250rs/- and other car owners should pay at 100rs per litre.
2)Regardless of who is ruling India, there will be no change in fuel price, unless the calculating method is changed. If Govt revenue is Rs 10 based on Rs 50 a litre today, Govt should maintain the same Rs 10 as their revenue even if the price of fuel cost Rs 100 a litre. If taxes are allowed to fluctuate, according to price of oil in international market, the common man will stand to benifit, as price stablity will be maintained, and its going to be a win / win situation for Govt and people. At present Central and State Govt are reaping huge taxes at the expense of Aam Adami. Its the Finance Minister who will have to speak up, as he is silently watching with glee, as his coffer is filling up.
i feel this needs to be done

The rising oil prices is a concern not only for India ,but also for all the nations across the world. This is not a mere problem which can be sorted out easily.
Oil is a renewable resource and some day or the other it will exhaust and same is the case with other resources(coal and so on ).The problem is not resolved if we do not to use oil or if we introduce reservations for the fuel price(which sounds a bit absurd) .In a more broader sense it does not sound realistic.
As suggested by Sid we can try to commute using the public transport and avoid using personal vehicles(But in practical sense this cannot happen because of the magnitude of the indian population travelling in bus will increase and it is not at all feasible to travel in public transports like buses and so on)
The possible solutions which I feel can help are:
1.Try too find an alternate for oil which can replace it by all means and which is easy to produce(ex:- reva car which runs on battery)
2.To reduce the consumption of oil resources and use it whereever it is mandatory.(ex:-use of electric rail engines instead of diesel rail engine)
3.Using fuel efficient vehicles which are more economical and consume less fuel.
4.Banning of vehicles which are more than 15 yrs old (They contain old engines and consume more fuel and also cause more pollution).
5.Increase the number of public transport vehicles and increase the connectivity between different places, this will help the public to opt for the public transport rather than driving all the way to their work places.(Ex:-If we increase the number of trams ,people will opt to go by trams which are safe and also the best means of transport).

1) Taxes on fuel seek this basic objective as per the government.

  • Raising government revenue for general (non-transport) expenditure purposes.
  • Efficiently allocating resources to and within the transport sector.
  • Financing road infrastructure and maintenance.
  • Redistributing income and meeting related expenses.
Now there is no need to say that hardly any of the above objective has been fulfilled by the givernment as the roads as ever are in dying state even after repeated maintainence of roads and there is escallating of costs due to bad planning by government authorities.

2) People must ask the government authorities that how is the tax levied on the fuels and how is the fuel price calculated ....in short the government must be made accountable to the rise in fuel prices. What impact does it have on our reserves as there is very high subsidy given to oil companies and why are these oil companies running in huge losses......proper management audit must be ordered so that the truth comes out.

Now coming to the alternative in using petrol and diesel.

1) Massive, large scale social awareness campaign should be launched by the government like the polio vaccination ad, so that the people come to know that oil is a non-renewable natural resource and how much money is spent in importing oil and various other products from oil manufacturing countries. The government should make public the figures of imports and its toll on exchequer. The campaign should promote the use of renewable natural resource like Bioethanol, hydrogen, CNG and so on as alternative to petrol and diesel.

2) Tata, Maruti and various other car manufacturing companies should in collaboration come out with a green car concept that does not depend on petrol as well as diesel but with the above mentioned fuel supporting engines.

3) The young generation or the generation Y should raise their voices and educate the people about the benefits of using renewable fuels. But that is a very huge asking simply because most of the autos in mumbai are converted to CNG but the basic fare we pay is still the same we used to pay when the auto was using petrol as fuel. So common guys raise your voices against this injustice and other thing to note is that even MEDIA is not bothered to highlight this ......(probably they are fearing that some political party might attack their office,,,,or they wont get TRP).

4) If at all the government is serious about this issue than its high time that the government think about upgrading the public transport system, introduce good quality buses which is again on the 'green' concept, use of cycles should be promoted for short distances say 2 kms and these things should be done on a brisk pace (which is not possible in India, reasons everyone knows) coz time is running out!

I think the only way we can avoid higher fuel prices is by developing sufficient R&D facilities to find out about alternative fuels.

1)A study said that the residue parts of the Wheat crop can be used to make fuel for electric generation as well as mixed with diesel to give us a greener alternative for FREE.

2)The efforts of our generation should be developing a sustainable and greener alternative to fossil fuels. No only does it work out cheaper to develop and use alternative fuels but also help us have a cleaner atmosphere and reduce the effects of global warming.

3)We can follow Brazil's example, they have been using Sugarcane residue mixed with diesel in the ratio 70:30 and have reaped the results of reducing imports as well as using the waste generated for a better use.

4)There is also a technique by which one can develop fuels using Corn seeds and it will be available in a couple of years.

5) The current production of Jatropia which is an ingredient mixed in diesel is low and more and more companies are trying to get into the production of Jatropia and asking the govt. to approve of Rising the current 20% mixing of Jatropia in diesel to 40%.

6) There was also an experiment by a person in the USA, using grease and Residue cooking oil as the sole fuel with a few chemicals giving it combustibility and he proved that the emission were reduced to almost nil.

These alternative can be used without making the people upgrade cars or technology

7) The ever growing market of Hybrid cars will also help India but affording the technology can be a problem.

THe change can only come if we are will to accept and work towards it

hi a detailed analysis of the Rail Budget Revealed that we only have 15000 Km of the total 63000 Km rail line electrified, which means that the rest of it demands either coal or diesel. Diesel is indeed the more prevalent and pernicious to the crude bill of the country. May be we need to plug this gap as well.
