GM expects to launch driverless cars on road by the year 2018 (and start testing them sometime near 2015). The announcement comes during the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
95% of road accidents are caused by human errors. These driverless cars will hope to reduce that significantly. However taking away the feel of driving from the people isn't a very easy ambition. Although most of the technology to enable this concept is already present (GPS / satellite based mapping, motion sensors, lane-change warning etc). An important roadblock for such cars to really make it on road would certainly be the government regulations, liability laws, safety, etc.
