The online gaming industry is in for a really, really good time if the findings of a research firm are to be believed. In fact Ormax, the firm which conducted the survey for internal study at an online gaming company launched recently by one of the largest corporate houses in the country, came up with some unbelievable projections.
The firm is bullish on the fast booming online gaming industry’s size to reach to Rs 900 crore by 2010 from the current size of just Rs 20 crore, as projected by a study. No wonder then that so many new portals, dedicated to online gaming, are joining the bandwagon.

Vispy Doctor, Managing Director of Ormax, told Mumbai Mirror, “No doubt, the industry is booming. And it will continue as the market dynamics are changing. The industry has overcome issues like cost of computers and Internet connectivity which will largely favour online gaming.”

It’s all about addiction

According to him, the survey studied an age-group of 8-23 in five cities. “We found that online gaming is rapidly becoming an addiction,” he said, adding that there are many reasons to believe the industry targets.

“Firstly, the cost of online gaming is falling. One can now have a monthly subscription for a game from Rs 100 onwards. Though there are different sources for computer games available like borrowing a computer game from a friend or downloading the same. But online games like Second Life have remained a special experience and many more such innovative games are coming into the market,” Doctor said.

Then there is the ever-falling cost of broadband which is widening opportunities further. But Doctor warned that there are challenges too, “Foremost among these are creating awareness on gaming portals which is the biggest challenge,” said Doctor.
