the Twin Cities metro area is a region, and a regional approach to business retention and recruitment is smart. We appreciate the idea of regional economic development and new efforts to make it happen.

But, with all due respect and regard for regionalism, we say: Ecolab, we're glad you're staying in downtown St. Paul.

Late last week, we learned that Ecolab, a commercial supplier of cleaning supplies and pest control services with a downtown St. Paul workforce of about 1,300 people, had re-signed a lease on a 150,000-square-foot building on Wabasha Street. The building houses 550 employees and is adjacent to the corporate headquarters. Ecolab had examined alternative sites because its lease on that building was expiring.

St. Paul's director of planning and economic development, Cecile Bedor, said her department had worked closely with Ecolab on the lease renewal. Ecolab is an important anchor downtown, and CEO Doug Baker has been a key community leader, Bedor said. "We are thrilled that they will remain in downtown St. Paul," she said.

"We're happy to be here," company spokes-man Mike Monahan told reporter Gita Sitaramiah. "We like downtown St. Paul."

We also send best wishes to the new owner of the historic Pioneer-Endicott buildings, residential dev-eloper Pak Properties, led by Rich Pakonen. As Sitaramiah reported, the 16-story Pioneer Building downtown was St. Paul's earliest skyscraper and later was connected to the six-story Endicott.
