Short Message Service (SMS) is a service available on most digital mobile phones that permits the sending of short messages (also known as text messages, or more colloquially SMSes, texts or even txts) between mobile phones, other handheld devices and even landline telephones. The term text messaging and its variants are more commonly used in North America, the UK, and the Philippines, while most other countries prefer the term SMS. Text messages are often used to interact with automated systems, such as ordering products and services for mobile phones, or participating in contests. There are also many services available on the Internet that allow users to send text messages free of charge. These messages are also used to send urgent information and conveying short messages which can be conveyed in few words.

But with these there are some rules also which are to be followed while messaging and are to be kept in mind. And it is to be remembered that these sms messages are generally 160 characters in length. These rules are as follows:

1. It is important to bring to your notice that you shuld not harras, abuse or threaten anyone through these services as there can be chances that you may land up in jail and spcially you should not pretend to be some one dangerous which you are not or you might find yourself in a big trouble and may be replyin to police officials for a message which you just sent for fun.

2. While sending an sms it is to be taken in notice that you do not use bad or obscene language. When you do such kind of thing you may be found guilty if the words are very objectionable you can also be charged for abuse. So while sending an sms one should not use bad, obscene or objectionable language.

3. While messaging please see to it that you don’t exchange personal and cofidential information as these messages can easily be sent to other people or can even be stolen through your signals so it should be avoided that information like your pin no, bank acc no and your other confidential information is not shared through this service.

4. You should also refrain yourself from sending useless messages to unknown numbers. This practise is called spamming. This is generally used for advertising and sending other kinds of publicity information.it should be noticed that spamming is considered as a crime and the service provider companies are taking strict action against this practise. In such cases you may also use your telephone numbers and if reported abuse you can also find your self facing law.

5. and it should be seen that you don’t use these services for crimes like cheating or for publicity because if caught then you will have to face serious consequences

Many cases have come into light from different countries where these services are used for help and crime both of these purposes. There are places where these are used in emergency and places where they are also used for serious terrorism acts. So it is really important to follow some simple rules and make this service as useful as possible.

Remember that SMS is informal. SMS shouldn't be used for formal invitations or to dump your girlfriend or boyfriend. The casualness of SMS diminishes the strength and meaning of the message.

The basic idea is just to be connected with our dear ones.

very truelly said, SMS is a much powerfull media but is being used without any defined rules and policies, even in Pakistan its very common used but with no checks...

The following protocols can be used to submit bulk SMS messages:
UCP/EMI
Perl, PHP, Java, .NET, Python API
CIMD2
HTTP POST or GET
SMPP 3.3/3.4

Common courtesy still rules. Contrary to popular belief, composing an SMS while you're in a face-to-face conversation with someone is just about as rude as taking a voice call.

Don't get upset if you don't get a reply. Before you text someone and get frustrated at the lack of a response, be sure that they're familiar with how to use the service, and that their carrier will accept messages from yours.
Be aware of your tone. It is extremely difficult to discern tone in text messages, just as in e-mail. What seems to you to be a completely innocuous message may be grossly misinterpreted by the recipient, causing certain discomfort if not irreparable harm.
