BSE Sensex surges 301 points as market pins hope on nuclear deal
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex rose 2.10 percent on Friday on hopes that the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the 35-nation International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors would approve India's safeguard agreement for allowing international inspections of its civilian nuclear reactors and pave the way for the India-US nuclear deal to move forward.
The 30-share benchmark index gained 300.94 points to close at 14,656.69, its highest close since July 24, with 22 components ending in the green. The index touched an intraday high of 14,682.33 and a low of 14,032.87.
The Sensex gained 2.7 percent during the week. However, the prime index, which hit a record high of 21,206.77 on Jan. 10, is still down about 27.8 percent this year, making it one of the worst performers in Asia.
The market's top gainer was Jaiprakash Associates, which surged 8.67 percent to close at Rs.170.45.
Financial stocks State Bank of India, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank soared 6.05 percent, 5.51 percent, 1.14 percent and 1.10 percent to close at Rs.1500.30, Rs.2402.20, Rs.642.10 and Rs.1107.30 respectively.
Tech stocks Wipro, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer Services and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) jumped 3.99 percent, 3.59 percent, 2.85 percent and 0.80 percent to close at Rs.432.60, Rs.1640.10, Rs.391.15 and Rs.839.25 respectively.
Top listed Reliance Industries gained 4.24 percent to close at Rs.2299.75 while engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) added 3.45 percent to close at Rs.2692.40.
Real estate giant DLF ended up 2.13 percent to close at Rs.520.15.
Other major gainers were Reliance Infrastructure (up 4.71 percent at Rs.1010.60), BHEL (up 4.61 percent at Rs.1756.50), Tata Steel (up 3.92 percent at Rs.680.65), NTPC (up 3.67 percent at Rs.176.70), Bharti Airtel (up 2.48 percent at Rs.819), Ranbaxy Laboratories (up 2.13 percent at Rs.509.75), Grasim Industries (up 1.98 percent at Rs.1836.10), and Mahindra & Mahindra (up 0.61 percent at Rs.523.70).
The day's biggest loser was Reliance Communications, which plunged 12.65 percent to close at Rs.436.80.
