10 Ways to Motivate Employees

It's not easy being in a management role. You're in charge of your own work ethic, but also that of your employees as well. Most employees look for monetary compensation in order to motivate them to stay fully engaged in their work, but as we all know, money doesn't tell the whole story.

Here are ten ways to motivate your employees to work to their highest level and thus help your company.

1. The first and probably most obvious way to motivate employees is to compensate them adequately based on performance. As the company's performance increases, so does the employee's pay. This is not always possible, especially with companies with deep layers of management, but with smaller companies where each employee's performance is under a microscope, it should be considered.

2. As a manager, it's important that your employees feel you care about their future success. Take the time to talk with each of your employees about what they envision in their future career-wise and where they would like to progress within the company. Some employers are able to provide reimbursement for education, if an employee is looking to advance within the company you could suggest some online university classes which can better their skills and opportunities within the company.

3. Be flexible and understand that things come up with your employees. Family emergencies pop up or your employees may come in a few minutes late here and there. Your willingness to be flexible will earn you respect and will motivate them to perform better under your watch.

4. Listen to your employees. This sounds simple, but many managers don't do it! Show your employees you care about their opinions by listening to their ideas on how to improve their job's responsibilities, or other ideas that would be benefit the company. You can also listen to their personal issues not related to work, but you should be careful on how you approach this.

5. Write thank you letters to your employees for work well done. Instead of typing up an email or just getting your secretary to buy them a card, handwrite a Thank You letter to the employee. It goes a long way to show that you actually put some serious thought into writing to them and that you truly appreciate their hard work. What, write a letter? Yes, wouldn’t you appreciate one?

6. Though it sounds strange and even counter-productive to let your employees sleep or rest instead of working, studies have shown that an employee will actually perform better if he/she is rested and alert. You may want to consider creating a nap room that your employees can utilize or offer to let them come in an hour later to get a bit of extra sleep before a long shift.

7. Mentor your employees. This should include you connecting them with other members of the company who can push them to think about things differently, and discover hidden talents and interests. Being a mentor shows your employees that you want the best for them and they will respect you for it.

8. Set goals for your employees. Telling them to simply do better leaves them no way to know if they are doing what you expect of them. Set specific goals that they are able to track, so that they can work harder in order to reach them.

9. Show your employees exactly the difference they have made by working hard. If they can actually see that their work is making a difference, they will be more likely to stay motivated.

10. Treat your employees as equals. At the end of the day, if you talk down to your employees, you won't gain their respect, which means they won't have the motivation to work hard for you. Be their manager, but be their friend, too.
