The Commonwealth is an association of independent sovereign states spread over every continent and ocean. From Africa to Asia, the Paci?c shores to the Caribbean, the Commonwealth's 2 billion people make up 30% of the world's population and are of many faiths, races, languages, cultures and traditions. The Commonwealth Games is a unique, world class, multi-sports event which is held once every four years. It is often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games'. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organization that is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth game for the year 2010 was held in Delhi, India from 3 to 14 October. This is the most expensive Commonwealth games ever. The total budget for the CWG is Rs.11,494 crore (US$2.5 billion). The official mascot for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is Shera, an anthropomorphized tiger. The CWG 2010 was almost a success in spite of the controversies it had before the opening. The common wealth games meant a lot to India on the world stage. GNCTD has allocated a sum of Rs.11.89 billion to upgrade and expand the infrastructure of Delhi. The Indira Gandhi International Airport has witnessed the formation of the longest runway in Asia, 4.43 meters, for double sided landing and takeoff to accommodate the huge air traffic. A six lane national highway NH8 was built for well connectivity with the airport to ensure a better transport for the visitors. It was ensured that there would be 2,000 CCTV cameras operating on the roads besides those inside the competition venues to ensure the safety of the athletes, visitors as well as our own citizens. The highlights of the CWG 2010 for athletes were the games village, free trip to taj, reserved lane for participants, security and pollution free environment. Surprise doping test were also conducted during the games for the athletes.

Initially, there was huge criticism on the games preparation. The common wealth games was criticized and put as jokes in magazines, newspapers, SMS, social networking sites because of the incidents like bridge collapse outside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and false ceiling of CWG venue falling. Moreover the visitors from other countries felt dissatisfaction for their CWG village. There was also a small problem in opening ceremony, Prince Charles or Indian President, who shall open the games.  Finally authorities made it assured to complete preparation before opening ceremony.

The concept of the opening ceremony concept was ‘The Wheel of Life”, sending the message that the whole world is one family. At the start of the ceremony, a huge helium balloon lifted up from the center of the jam-packed stadium with colorful puppets dangling from it to welcome the spectators. The aerostat, which is said to be the biggest helium balloon in the world, has a 360-degree projection surface. Prince Charles delivered the Queen's message and Indian President Pratibha patil delivered her speech. Many cultural and yoga performance was exhibited. The concluding part of the program was a theme song : Jeeyo, Utho, Badho, Jeeto ( Live, Rise, Move and Win ), composed by the Oscar winning A R Rahman.

Indians also gave their best ever performance. The host got a promising performance by their athletes especially shooting and wrestling.Several Commonwealth Games records were broken, including two world records.
