1     1.Can you tell us a brief history about Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR)?

The Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai, is one of India's most prestigious business schools and academic institutions. Established in 1970, it is recognized as an Institution of National Importance by the Ministry of Finance. Since its inception, IFMR's mission has been focused on contributing to growth and development efforts in India with an emphasis on finance and research. IFMR also has several key partnerships with some of the leading academic institutions worldwide and offers a stimulating and world class environment to faculty and students alike.

 2.How is IFMR known among peer B Schools?

IFMR has been consistently rated among the best B Schools in India. CRISIL rates IFMR with A** with A*** being the highest for IIMs. IFMR has also been ranked 9th overall in India in the field of Finance by CNBC-TV18, the rankings also include IIMs. Business Standard rates IFMR in A1 category alongside IIMs.

3.How is IFMR known among the corporate, industrial and financial houses?

IFMR being founded from the house of Kothari's and ICICI, it is known to many corporate and financial houses for its standards and teaching methodology. IFMR has MoUs with BSE and D&B. Also UCAL Fuel systems, a manufacturing company, offer a course on total quality management. Thus the students are ensured a good exposure to the industry complementing their rigorous academic programs in the college.

4. What are the core strengths of IFMR?

 The faculty at IFMR has always been its core strength. IFMR has a judicious mix of an academically strong and dedicated full time faculty complemented by the visiting faculty, comprising of people with years of experience in their respective industries.

5.Can you tell us about the courses offered at IFMR?

We have three main course programs. PGDM-Regular program is a two year full time course that offers specializations in Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and IT/Operations. With courses on Financing, investment and Risk Management, Derivatives, Services Marketing, Sales and Distribution Management, Supply Chain Management, Financial Technology, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management, Strategic HRM, Training & Development, Compensation Management and Cross Cultural Relations,, the institute prepares its students thoroughly for any role in the chosen specializations.

IFMR's unique two-year program in Financial Engineering has been designed to provide management graduates with rigorous training in applied quantitative finance. As financial markets become more integrated and sophisticated, there is a strong demand for graduates who can not only understand and price these products but also measure and manage the risk arising from such products. IFMR's flagship program in Financial Engineering was launched in year 2005 to meet this demand.

PGDM in Development & Sustainable Finance focuses on addressing the critical need for having a more integrated and sustainable financial system, thereby contributing positively to the societies where we live and work. This program not only makes students aware of theoretical underpinnings of development but also gives them the opportunity to implement class room learning through various live projects. It imparts skills to use finance for growth and development process that India is presently witnessing.

In addition to the full time courses, IFMR offers a three-year part time Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) program. The program is intended to impart functional and management skills to working executives for successful careers in management.

6)   6. How are the placements in IFMR?

IFMR has always had 100% placement since its first batch. Many corporate and financial houses have been our regular recruiters. ICICI, CRICIL, HCL, Deliotte, Cognizant, Infosys, Dun & Bradstreet are some of our esteemed recruiters.

7. What other extracurricular activities does IFMR encourage?

IFMR is always buzzing round the year with club and extracurricular activities. The many clubs existent at IFMR compete with each other in coming up with events that would out do the others. Clubs like Samarthan-the social service club, Insight- the marketing club, Colloquium club(for organizing guest lecturers),  Edge- The IT Club, Mitr-The HR club, Arthasabha-The Finance Club and many more work round the year in organizing various events all backed up by Uden Fantasi- The Designing club. Students from IFMR participate in various competitions of other B Schools and corporate and have won many prizes in many management events. The most recent one's being the finalists in CFA Global Investment Research Challenge India, winning the CRISIL Young Thought Leader Awards 2011 and many more. These prizes reaffirm the quality and caliber of our students at IFMR.
