IIMK conducts a Thought Leadership Workshop on High Performance for the Government of Kerala

“Gift Unopened: Governance Insights for Transformation”

 

 


The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), on 18th August 2011, hosted Shri Oomen Chandy, the Chief Minister of Kerala and the Council of Ministers, Government of Kerala for a day-long programme on Good Governance for Effective Leadership titled “THE GIFT UNOPENED: Governance Insights for Transformation”.


The day started with the Chief Minister paying floral tributes to Gandhiji?s Bust, followed by the unveiling of the theme of the upcoming Indian Business History Museum at IIM Kozhikode. The Chief Minister then had an interactive session with the students of IIMK on various aspects of Kerala?s governance as well as its developmental and growth prospects.

 

 

This was followed by a thought leadership workshop for the entire Council of Ministers, starting with an introductory note sounded by Prof. Saji Gopinath. The objective of the workshop was to enable the participants to imbibe new working styles, provide clear and tangible strategic inputs across sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, environment, investment, health and education.
Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode conducted the inaugural session on the novel topic of “Self Governance for High Performance Leadership”, highlighting the importance of emotional engagement and inclusion. In Prof. Chatter jee?s words, “A politician wants to work for the next election. A statesman wants to work for the next generation. We want more statesmen and less polititicians in the country”.

 


Prof. Unnikrishnan Nair gave valuable insights into building a high performance culture in the Government by tackling major concerns in a progressive manner and without inconsistencies. He talked about „change? as the need of the hour which can be achieved by flexibility, adaptability, knowledge sharing and making the most of opportunities.


The other highlights of the workshop were given by industry specialists like Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director, CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), Shri T.T. Thomas, Former CMD of FACT and Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, Founder of Narayana Hrudayalaya, who had interactive sessions with the Council of Ministers on Kerala?s investment climate, industrial?s prospects and some insightful sessions on high quality healthcare for the poor, rescpectively.


Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director, CII drew insights on how Kerala is perceived by the industry. He emphasized on the need for sustainable development, creation of economic clusters around various service sectors, building a brand image of the state and reforms in the work culture of the Government.

Later, breakout sessions were conducted with Ministers, Leading Faculty members at IIMK, students and experts discussing on six themes, namely, agriculture, infrastructure, environment, investment, health and education. The day ended with the Valedictory function facilitated by Prof. Debashis Chatterejee and the National Anthem.
Numerous worthwhile questions from the media personnel were addressed by the Chief Minister and the Dirctor of IIMK in conjunction with the Finance and Industry Ministers in the course of two press meets. The teaching techniques and the ambience of IIMK were widely appreciated by the members of the Kerala Cabinet. The Council of Ministers commented that the combination of academic and industry inputs received by them gave them concrete plans for the improvement of major economic sectors of Kerala.
