Were you tagged by a common line with what everyone summoned you in college? It was fun at college and everyone had such unique names and tag lines dedicated to them as per their personalities. And even after years after college when your oldie friends call you by the same name and the tag line makes you feel astonished right and see the impact the tag lines have for you. Popularity and remembrance for years, isn't it?

A tagline is a succinct phrase, situated under or alongside your logo that communicates a single but powerful brand message designed to resonate strongly with an intended audience.  It is not a proverb, maxim, saying, mission statement, or generic description of what your organization is and does.

How can taglines be of help?

Ameliorates your brands message to consumers

Makes your brand promise sticky in the minds of consumers

Taglines amplify the value of brand along with its relevance.

Undoubtedly expresses the meaning vision and mission of your organization

Its again helps Communicate qualities of your brand character

It emphasizes a key differentiator or competitive advantage

Align your message to a specific audience or target market

Promise the fulfillment of a deeply-held need or wish

Taglines not only communicate the message of its brands but It has got much more to spread like the vision, mission, brand promise, brand experience, its competitors.

Apart from what the taglines compose or inhibit in themselves they can also be used to

  1. Exhibit a change in positioning
  2. Launch a brand awareness campaign
  3. Forge a relationship with a new audience
  4. Define a new direction
  5. Highlight a key benefit or attribute

Theoretically speaking taglines should possess the some really great and awesome attributes like

  • It should be Original
  • Believable
  • Should be real
  • Simple & Understandable
  • Succinct
  • Should get to the point
  • Positive
  • Should elevate their mood
  • Should be Specific & relevant
  • Unconventional
  • Break the mold
  • Provocative
  • Make them think
  • Conversational
  • Make it personable
  • Persuasive
  • Sell the big idea
  • Humorous
  • Tickle their funny bone
  • Memorable

Some of my favorite taglines are

Adaptec -Storage outside the box.

Apple Computer (Power Mac) -More power to you.

YouTube: Broadcast Yourself.

hi5: Who's in?

Autoblog: We obssessibely cover the auto industry.

Boing Boing: A directory of wonderful things.

Perez Hilton: Celebrity Juice. Not from concentrate.

 Sheer driving pleasure BMW

The way to fly British Airways

 99.44% pure Ivory Soap

Gizmodo: The gadget guide. So much in love with shiny new toys, it's unnatural.

Buzz Marketing: Because everyone is entitled to my opinion.

How can you create a eye catching and worth hearing tagline

Jumble up the page with a list of words or phrases that communicate your idea and that also tie to your logo or a visual you're using.

Use the list to generate new ideas.

"play" with the words by using tools like rhyming or alliteration.

Simplify& Rewrite.

DO

  • collect other company's taglines and analyze what works and what doesn't work.
  • start by developing a list of what's unique to what you do and your way of doing it.
  • your own mini-market research. Ask strangers if they understand your business after seeing and hearing your tagline.
  • use your specific target audience in your tagline, if possible.
  • keep it short.
  • turn the phrase around. If you can't say it without skipping a step, then rephrase it.

DON'T

  • use hip or esoteric taglines.
  • make your tagline too general.

TAKE TAGLINES TO THE NEXT LEVEL WHEREIN JUST FEW WORDS AND YOU ARE ON THE TOP RECALL IN THE MINDS OF EVERYONE

Thats how I would define a tagline to conclude.
