 Malcolm Young Retiring

A close friend of AC/DC's Malcolm Young said the 61-year-old guitarist is seriously ill and will never perform live again.

Choir Boys front man Mark Gable said the founder of Australia's most successful rock band is physically unable to perform anymore and will probably never record again. The comments come just a day after rumors began circulating that AC/DC would be retiring. AC/DC's management company. In an interview with ABC radio this morning, Mark confirmed that Malcolm was sick and that it was unlikely the band will perform together again. From what I understand, and it's even been confirmed in part by his son Ross, that it would appear Malcolm is unable to perform anymore, he said. It's not just that he is unwell; it's that it is quite serious. It will constitute that he definitely won't be able to perform live. He will probably not be able to record.

He said Young's illness may not necessarily stop the band from continuing with plans for their 40th anniversary tour and to record their first album since 2008's Black Ice. There was speculation that they had this even tacit agreement that if no member currently was able to perform, DC would cease, he said. However Alex Young's son Stevie replaced Malcolm Young a few years back for a tour, and nobody knew the difference. Mark has been close friends with AC/DC for years, with the Choirboys recording their first album in the same studio where the iconic Australian band recorded their first five albums after Angus and Malcolm Young's older brother and Easy beats founder George Young heard their demo in Sydney. One of the group's best-loved works is their successful and influential Back in Black album, which has sold more than 22 million copies in the US. Singer Brian Johnson revealed work on a new album had been delayed due to a health issue with one member in 2012. He told a Florida radio station the anniversary tour was on hold but they were hoping to record next month.

We've been denying anything, because we weren't sure. One of our boys was pretty ill, so we didn't like to say anything, and we're very private about things like this, so we didn't want to say anything,  the 66-year-old said in February. It's been 40 years of the band's existence I mean, honestly, our fans are just the best in the world, and we appreciate every one of them. So, like I said, we'll have to go out, even though we're getting a bit long in the tooth.

Brian is the oldest member, while bassist Cliff Williams is 64, guitarist Angus Young and drummer Phil Rudd are 59, and guitarist Malcolm Young is 61. Angus Young shot down retirement rumors in 2011 by saying the band were working on new material, telling Sky News: We'll definitely be back we'll just keep at it and next time we'll try to do it bigger and better.
