Go to the Market, Learn to Cook then Save and Manage your Money

There has always been a misconception regarding supermarket and fresh market prices. Most consumers think that the items found on uniformly organized shelves within the air conditioned walls of supermarkets are cheaper than those of fresh markets. However, is that really the case?

Supermarkets vs. Fresh Markets

Think of it like this: Supermarkets stock up on goods with clever packaging and bundles, so that they can maximize their profits and lower their costs in purchasing stocks of goods. Fresh markets, such as farmer`s markets, stock up on goods from their own backyards. They don`t need to get in touch and haggle prices from suppliers because they are already the suppliers of themselves.

Supermarkets are subject to paying federally imposed tax, therefore, they will be needing all the money they can get to break even their expenses. The goods sold in supermarkets can only be replenished by bulk ordering to wholesalers and suppliers. The price dictated by supermarkets are intended as payment for rent, employees` salaries, utilities, equipment such as cash registers and scanners, and tax and supplier fees the supermarket has paid for in advance. There can be no bargaining at supermarkets for their prices are fixed.

Fresh markets, on the other hand is mostly managed by cooperatives and merchant committees. The goods sold in fresh markets are sustainable and replenished by the farmers themselves. The prices dictated by fresh markets are aimed to help the farmers purchase the materials they need to sustain their livestock, poultry and vegetables in their own backyards. Buying from fresh markets is the same as going directly to the supplier and paying for what you need. Fresh markets offer the best value for your money. You are assured of fresh items, free from preservatives and chemicals.

Industrial Differences of Supermarkets and Farmer`s Markets

The shopping center industry is more favored by the government, since it is a lucrative source of revenue. By charging rent to sellers and charging advertisement fees to companies, shopping centers can yield more tax. This can be defined more as a massive stockroom of goods, managed by businessmen, with financial revenues and expansion as priority.

Farmer’s markets, on the other hand, are more concentrated on sustaining and replenishing the agricultural industry. Getting goods straight from their own yards, farmers sell goods--fruits, vegetables, poultry or livestock--prepared by their own hands. They are directly in charge of planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables, and raising and nourishing cattle and poultry for meat and dairy products.

Farmer`s markets can be defined more as a haven for goods, managed by the growers themselves, who know how to care for their goods with sustainability as the priority.

Weighing the Price Difference

The weight and packaging of goods you purchase can dictate the value you are receiving for every purchase. Upon closer investigation of weight and packaging you will realize the difference between the pricing tactics of supermarkets and farmer`s markets.

For example, in 2005, supermarkets offered a pound of Romaine Lettuce for $1.38, whereas the farmer`s market priced $2.50 for a three pound bundle. Had the supermarket followed the three pound lettuce bundle of farmer`s markets, they would be charging you a hefty $4.49.

On average, organic goods sold in fresh markets are 40 percent cheaper than its supermarket counterparts.

Real Life Practicality of Fresh Food

Fresh food such as newly harvested crops are deprived of industrial grade preservatives to maximize shelf life. They are all raised and nourished with the best organic nutrients, and packed and prepared without chemicals. Just imagine having to suffer illnesses and disease from consuming chemical rich foods. You will have to allocate hospital and medicine budgets for times like these.

Fresh food tastes a lot better than its supermarket packaged counterparts. The real life practicality of fresh food is that it teaches the consumer to become more price savvy. It also teaches the consumer the valuable skill of cooking his or her own meals rather than having to routinely pay expensive restaurant and fast food take out bills.

Smart Shopping: How to Check for Freshness

When shopping, just make sure that what you`re buying is fresh. For fish, look for clear eyes, shiny metallic skin and red gills. For shellfish, buy them alive. Choose the ones that move about healthily inside the tank, don`t bother buying those that barely move. The bottom line for seafood is not to buy anything that has unpleasant odor. For beef, the richer the color red, the better. If the red is faded, skip to the next choice. For vegetables, wilting is a giveaway warning. For fruits, knowing what is ripe from what’s not is all about a sweet or sour scent.
